Default Would YOU use a female mapper/tuner.....

Ok....just imagine Stu was a "proper" bird named Sally...i mean born as Sally and not Stu then turned...even though this may be what Stu does when he by himself please discount that from this topic...

So its now Sally @ Motorsport Developments......EDITED for miners and young children

Anyway you get the picture.......would you use her to map your car, build you an engine????Or does the female bit put you off as you think they cant be as good as a geezer?

what if some top bird had rebuilt ya motor and forgot to tighten the rod bolts? as she stood there in front of you asking how she could possibly recompense you for the mass destruction caused - would you take a different approach than if say stu had done it?

If she was proven to be good and know her stuff then yes I would use her.

I do however honestly think that a woman would find it a lot harder getting established in this business in the first place because of her sex.

How could she be proven to be good, as too many people would avoid her in the first place because she was female?

Unfortunately in ths male dominated sector, people would not use her purely because she was female. many men would feel threatened that a woman knew more than they did about things that would be traditionally male knowledge areas.

This is my opinion. As to whether I would use someone or not, unfortunately a woman would have to prove herself to be twice as good as anyone else for me to consider her in this area. Sad but true.

I will now tell you why i "personally" am interested in this topic (A first for an IMA racing topic i admit )

My Daughter Catherine is heavily interested in this market sector and against my wishes has just chosen her final years subjects to be able to get into this trade and wants ultimately to become a motorsport technition / mapper.

Ive told her that i feel its a bad sector to try and build a career as a female but also told her that if thats what she wants to do and she wont change her mind then il make it my lifes ambition to have her as good (if not better than) by 22years of age as 99% of men at what she wants to do because i feel that a female in this game would need to run rings around the opposition so were starting at stiochiometry not tyre fitting. (im praying it centres around mapping TBH but fundamentals are required more than anything else cos mapping childs play)

So please lets have some sensible replies here.

FRS,
I am being realistic and giving an honest answer . How many women do you know that are experienced in this area? I can't think of one and common sense always dictates that you are mistrustful of things you don't know about until proven otherwise.

However, once proven, I know she would get my utmost respect, as I would know how hard it would have been for her to get in that position in the first place.

Does she really want to venture into this field Stu?

That's a hard business to be in, as you well know!

My honest opinion is that I wouldn't be having my daughter going down that road, but if she does then all the best of luck..............

Mike Rainbird,
FRS,
I am being realistic and giving an honest answer
Im happy with your answer Mike, i believe it to be a realistic representation of current thinking.

However, with women in general being very misstrusting of MEN ripping em off, i wonder if the fact that women are fast becoming more and more involved in the modified car scene i may be jumping the gun a little and missing a very valuable opening in the future mapping/modding marketplace...

yes, if she knew what she was doing instead of talking a good game, i used to work with a female mechanic in the renault garage i worked in, only thing that held her back was lack of strength if something was seized on good and proper

but if she had a good reputation and was well known id use her regardless of sex

Very good point actually............if the interest from women continues to rise then it could be a winner!
