IMO I would be very sceptical of using a female tuner just relying on word of mouth...because it takes a brave/stupid man to slag off women in business positions whether they are good/bad or indifferent.

However it also depends on where she is employed...if it was with a VERY reputable company like MSD thenI would have no problem but if she was 'going it alone' so to speak i'd probably be more inclined not to use her ( rightly or wrongly ).

Whatever your daughter does best of luck..

i'm also happy with your answer Mike in that it is clearly how you honestly feel, and i respect you for telling it straight.

but twice as good as a man? why? is it not enough that she is just as good as?

i honestly wouldn't care if it was a man, woman, tranny or whatever. if they can do the job to the standard required for a fair price, they'll get the job.

Stu, you could be right about the female market. there is a growing proportion of female modders out there. best wishes to her in whatever she chooses to do anyway, and i'm sure that she'll get all the love and support that she needs to do it well. to know at that age what she wants to do is unusual, so she must be pretty sure to choose something so focussed.

The schools nowadays seem very keyed to helping you carve a correct career path early in life nowadays. Some of the things they do really shock me now... impressive.

I guess picking her up from school in everything from a 360Dino to A 550bhp Esc Cossi over the years has probably clouded her judgement as to what a great Job this is to be in

thing is stu, is there a future in the mapping tuning business in the long term?

obviously oem's will always need mappers, but the ems are becoming more sophisticated, and regulations regarding emissions and fuel consumption are getting ever tighter. the questions is will oem ems's be able to be changed in the future (due to encryption), and will it be allowed?

Hard to say to be honest, the new generation of encryption hit the streets about 6months ago and thats bypassed already... but its tricky at best. The thing is, they NEED to be able to rewrite the software its a simple necessity due to its complexity and the amount of bugs in it, so finding a way for them to be able to do it and us not is giong to be pretty damn hard

Ian2wdsaffcos,

Honestly mate, Yes they do.. ive never once picked catherine up without OK'ing it with the customer.. its not worth the risk in case anything happened along the way...

Why would they be bothered though seriously? Common sense they are ok with it to be honest:

"Ive got to stop for 30mins to pick my daughter up now mate. Alternatively i can collect her in yours and use the trip as part of the setup test drive"

"No problem pal" is the usual reply luckily for Catherine.

FRS,
Two equal tuners one male one female - which would you honestly use? I know I would more than likely chose the male one (and not for any reasons ). When would I chose the female over the male? If she was better than the male - hence why I made my comment - females always have to be better than the equivalent male in this line of business .

At the end of the day I couldnt give a toss who did it as long as it was right first time. Good luck to her. I agree though it will be tough. For some insane reason a bloke will be given that bit of leeway if he fucked up.

Maybe you looking at this the wrong way, what percentage of the scene will be taken up by women in the future, as said earlier, more women are coming into the scene, it may be a rare thing for a woman to be in this business now, but in 5 - 10 years time the amount of women in the scene will be huge and so seeing a women working on a motor will be less strange and more likely common place.

your daughter will have the knowledge and support behind her at an early stage in life and with proven jobs behind her she will become trusted and respected and possibly become better known being a woman, it could make her stick in peoples mind.

Also, women can feel uneasy in an all male garage environment, so are more likely to go to a female tuner and have work done.

I say let her give it a try, if it fails, it fails, atleast she knows she gave it ago and would still be young enough to try something new.

I would use a women, as long as she was good.

I mean i would rather have a female doctor, and that is fixing my fooking body, so I reckon having one work on my car would be OK.

Like Mike said though she would have to be proven, a bit like everyone who I have do work for me on my car already.

I remember on of my ex girlfriends when I was a kid cam eround to help me underseal my first car (Mk1 Escort) and she came round wearing just a baggy pair of overalls and nothing else. Was the best bit of undersealing I have ever seen, and I would certainly let a women do that for me again.!!

Thanks guys.. this is more like it

Its deffo a wierd one, but the more i think carefully about it the more i think it may not be the bad idea i at first told her it was....

Shes already had some input in acouple of engines ive built and has been out with me and actively helped to map 2 cars and from what i can see, the mental agility is there so there shouldnt be any issue over and above "Will folk employ her?"

Thanks for the input guys, any more very welcome.
