Has anyone got any experience of working in Norway and living here in the UK, reason i ask is I'm flying over there for an interview tomorrow. It's working offshore on a rotation, 2 weeks on 3 weeks off, then 2 weeks on 4 weeks off i think. Anyway, i just wanted to find out a bit more about the tax situation and how it would effect my salary.

i worked in holland and the inland revenue told me that no mater where you work,unless your out the country for more than 6 months in the tax year you still have to pay uk tax.

Yeah i thought that might be the case, but what about norweigan tax??? I think i will have to pay that to, and claim it back, that is my only concern!

I know (knew) that Merchant seamen can be paid into an Offshore Bank, Jersey etc, and you only get taxed when you bring money into the country.

If you are doing 2/3 and 2/4 then presumably you will be coming back to the U.K when not working, that means you are only out the country for 2 or 3 weeks.

Ask at the interview, they will know all about it.

If you end up paying norweigen tax thats 40 per cent and beer costs a fiver a pint.If you stay out of the uk for a total of 9 months in a year period then you will end up with an NT (no tax due) code.good luck mate.

Hi Buddy,

As a merchant seaman....(Ex...) I can probably give you a very straight answer on this one.

You must be out of the uk, for 183 days (1 day over six months) in order to avoid paying UK tax..... That's basically the answer to all your questions. I was working for P&O Shipping (Cruise Ships), it don't really matter if your working on ships, Oil Rigs etc. The rule is still the same.

As for paying Norweigan Tax,,,,,, I'm not sure about that.

You will need to pay income tax either to the country you work in, or the UK not both - most countries have agreements in place in relation to this.

i dont think that counts for rigs in the north sea. no way! if people work a regular rotation of 2/2 etc they could easily stay away more than 6months by working a little more!. i dont believe that law counts because its a permanent fixture.

It was crap because i didn't go....Lol.
I got a phonecall on sunday night to go offshore first thing on monday morning, so i couldn't make it! I was on call anyway so i half expected it. i have spoken to them and they seem ok about it but i'm not sure how long i will be away! Any further forward with the car yet???
