Default How Reliable Are 4wd Front Diffs??

Ive got a brand new 4wd Cos front diff here:

Im currently finding out prices on all new bearings and seals to fit the unit into a good diff casing, but Ive been quoted £300 to do the swap over including the bearings, etc. Ive got a good working diff on order from North Yorks (Cheers Paul ) so is it really worth pulling the new diff apart and fitting new bearings, etc along with this new diff or just bolt up the working one when I receive it??

I would rather put £300 towards a front quaife item or something else to make the car run smoother and not blow the engine up if the front diffs are quite reliable...

My cars 400bhp and does get launched. The old diff has lasted me 18months (Not sure how long with previous owner) and I believe it died due to an oil leak in the casing and me not re-topping it up and stopping the leak (Lazy )

Its cost me £80 to get this, £85 for the new diff and £300 to have everything replaced so thats £465 on a standard front diff Thats half towards a rear quaife diff, which I feel is more important??????

Fletch,

The standard front diff internals are actually quite strong, it's the diff casing that usually fails.

Under hard launching the casing can split in two - will put a pic up in a minute of what happened to mine in hte Bailey engones saph (400 BHP) when launched.

A stainless steel strenghining plate can help a lot, as can a proper Quaife thick-wall case (expensive).

Cheers Doug, Im gonna stick the diff up for sale for £80 to get me cash back and get a strenghtening plate I think... Saves alot of money and hassle getting all that work done for not much added bonus.

Do you know what comes in the plate kits?? i.e. longer bolts or anything??

Cheers

IIRC you get the stainless steel plate and a set of high tensile bolts that would be 8mm longer than the standard ones.

Front diff casing failure pic:

My best ever launch (0 to 20ft ), then a loud bang

doug the fletch brothers SERIOUSLY mean launch the car,,,,,,, there fucking animals when driving,,,,, got balls of steel them 2

i sugest welding plates all over the diff and then fit a "catch" net to save people behind you for getting showered with the remains of parts of your car mate

or just convert it to rwd

Ginge - I meant what part of the diff makes the casing crack....Or is it just the physical jolt of a mega launch?

it looks as though the engine mounts is the problem, as if the engine has rocked back.

The Cossie does have it's hick-ups every now and again, I had the head repaired in October because it had a slight crack between inlet valves when the headgasket went. Also had it ported just a touch and it's improved the way it drives loads!

On the whole though nothing major really in the past few years.........I do enjoy driving the car but i work about 65hrs a week i don't really get the time to enjoy it....

Do like my top speed runs aswell, and also giving it proper shit at Pod (Think i did about 70 qtr mile runs last year)

Have to get down Southend one month as i've been working every first Tuesday of the month for quite some time

With this shite weather i don't take it out much...When the snow comes out though it a different matter

I work shifts (earlies, lates and nights 7 days a week) for a company called PPG refinish who own ICI + Nexa autocolor, the company produces paint for cars. i only make a few production lines including primers, basecoats, pearls, flips etc etc

Very well paid job as the stuff i use everyday is extremely dangerous......Include cromates, Epoxy resins and harmful solvents.

I love it though! I've been there 8 years since i started as a youthful apprentice at the tender age of 19
