Default gt 35 compressor stall

a mate of mine had his cossie on the rollers today at engine advantages and made 550bhp@ 28 psi of boost trouble is he was aiming a bit higher but when the boost was uped all you'd get is alot of compresor stall. what would cause this? his spec is gt35, rs500 inlet, 8 greens, 7:2.1 comp, grp a ported head, bd16 inlet and bd14 exhaust cam. the only thing we can think of is the exhaust cam is to small because the air is getting in but can't consume it into the exhaust quick enough causing the turbo to stall? any input would be apprieciated thanks.

needing bigger inlet valves? only thing i can think of is the engine cant take in all the air as the valves are too small or cam lift and duration isnt good enough...but im probably wrong

i would not be asking if paul had said anything seems like when you get into this sort of power range tuners seem reluctant to give advice unfortunatly but as far as i know paul did not seem to know, cheers

Question for the un-initited.

What is Compressor stall? Is it that the shaft actually stops or just the power line on the graph just plateauxs at a certain point?

I don't know enough about that level of spec to give any decent advice, but reckon you and the above posting (weegaz) are on the right track, or at least sounds plausible.

Time to speak to some other tuners methinks..... Martin Hadland of Reyland Motorsport (figures/performance stat's speak for theselves, and his prices might surpirse you!) & Harvey@SCS have plenty of experience with this level of tune, or there's Stu@Motorsport Developments, Karl Norris who both use this board.

Incidentally, who spec'd/ mapped / built the engine / decided on turbo?

Good luck getting it sorted.

now your talking in riddles

i know of 2 EA cars that both recently pushed nearly 600bhp with GT35s and then not long after decided to put a rod into orbit.

someone REALLY needs to teach EA whats a "good" external wastegate mounting position, and whats a "easy, but wont fookin work" one too

ive lost all faith in em!

Unless its just miss-firing then the problem will be that it can't consume enough air! I'd be doublechecking the head porting to see if it is all it's made out to be!

maybe he realised going from working for a world class company like AER http://www.aerltd.com/ to a poxy tuners doing loads of pretty ordinary roadcars was a downstep, and has gone to beg for his old job back

if the wastegate was fitted in such a stupid place it could hardly flow anything, so the boost was going sky high, then thats a problem.

dont think thats why threw a rod tho, jus one of the problems

Time to speak to Martin or karl if you ask me.... two people who have fitted GT turbos on YB engines and had proven and reliable results.

Look at what Steve says... Coincidence??? NOT in my opinion.

well .. i think i can explain the reason .. and also the reason I dont use rollerbearing turbo's above 400 bhp!

the problem is in the design if you ask me, we have tried 5 engines with rollerbearing turbo's for rally purposes (2 cosworth and 3 evo 7 engines)

they all went bang because of the rollerbearings being eaten by the engine, after some research it showed that the axle was giving way when you go off throttle (up and above 2 bar or 28 psi or more)
this seems to wreck the rollerbearing and since going off throttle happens a lot on a rally car the engines never made it to the finish line..

and we quit using them in the rally because we like to make it to the finish line

garett only gives support up to 2.6 bar (1.6 bar absolute)..
which is to low for the rally..

nowadays it seems you can get hybrid ones which should do better but i am not trying anymore

Turbinator, Were you running a Dumpvalve on these cars?

Karls, Martins, and my Turbo that did the Gumball have had NO problems at all in the cars....all running over 600bhp reliably. Not heard of any problems with these Turbos at all apart from what YOU have alledged happened. They DO need to be watercooled and run dumpvalves though.

Be interesting as more and more people use these Turbos and I think you will be proved to be very wrong!
