1.9 cvh, P.E. S2, any one know anything at all?
hi guys, i've recently aquired an 88 xr3i running a power engineering conversion (1.9 s2) as far as i know this is a bored out 1600 the only differences i know of are the spark plugs and the oil, i believe its running 5w40, does anybody know of any other parts, espcecially service parts that are different to the standard mfi cvh 3i ?
also is it normal to have a bit of a whine from an s2 lsd gearbox?oh and will ERST brakes fit behind 14" wheels, i want to put some more appropriate wheels on to it as its it has new 5 spoke 15 that don't look quite right,
i've repeatedly emailed power engineering to no avail i'm going to ring them when i get a chance.
i got no replies when i posted this in the other cars section so i'm reposting here- mods delete original post if you like
thanks in advance for any help

PassionFord Post Whore!!
standard service parts are the same as any cvh
plugs depend on engine spec boost etc
erst brakes do not fit behind 14's
a whiney gearbox can be fooked, or can last for years, knocking noises are the true signs of a shagged box
hope this helps
are you planning an xr3i sleeper, if so my recommendation would be to get hold of some late spec 4x4 saff sharktooth alloys, will look nice and subtle

i'm planning on using it as a sleeper for my daily driver... was going for RST alloys myself but leaving a non ented bonnet no skirts, and a good dose of rust! may rmeove the PE sticker off the back and replace the 88spec spoiler with a 90spec one.
thanks for you help.
btw its not turbo'd its n/a and i have no idea about the spec, just the bills fomr when it was done

The PE 1.9 System 2 conversion is pretty handy - although its not all good news
I think they used to make 135bhp (I'm assuming its a normally aspirated version as you dont mention otherwise) Torque on them is great of course with the larger capacity.
There were quite a few issues with reliability of the turbo ones due to PE boring them out to jsut past the recommended tolerances. They used to use liners pressed in to strengthen the block but they sometimes cracked in high boost applications. After some years they dispensed with the liners so it depends when your system 2 conversion dates from.
The long stroke can make the engine a bit under square so not too revvy although with all the torque you dont need to thrash the pants off it - you can offset this to some degree with cam selection tho.
If your engine has the PE stg3 head and SX428 cam then you're in luck as their head and cams come highly recommended. Whip off the dizzy and see if the cam has SX428 stamped on the end.

I know my PE history
Does it have one of their finned alloy rocker covers by any chance? Looks a bit like the RS 1600i one but with Power Engineering on the left hand side. Been looking for one of those for an age.

Mr Guzzler - if you bump into Rich Prior during the day ask him if they still have the pattern casting for the PE alloy CVH rocker cover please - I'd be interested to know.
