Default Diagnostics readers OBD2

I'm thinking of investing in a cheap code reader for my Focus tdci......it doesn't have any engine management lights on or ever has but will it read stored codes?

I'm hoping it's going to diagnose faulty egr valve or similar

Are they worth the £25 for the cheap ones on ebay? Or are they a waste of money?
