Default Charge cooler updated cooling

Hi allthanks for advice on oil consumption have another question!

my cossie has additional radiator that is connected to a 12v pump that has its own header tank and pumps through the charge cooler as a heat exchanger, it’s a completely independent system.

my question is does anyone else have a similar system and when does it run as I’ve never seen it running and unable to catch it when fans run I’m always too slow!

I suspect its it’s linked to the fans of the normal rad and cuts in and out with that or perhaps it’s stopped working all together?

will be digging my multimeter out at some point but have a 2 yr old little girl so never have any time for anything!

Says oil pump but it’s definitely water going through it
Header thank with no expansion but should never be more than Luke warm in my opinion anyway
That’s the top of the charge cooler intake the exit is below and goes back to the independent radiator

Never seen or heard of such a strange set up on a YB engine.

its not that strange a set up it’s common in the marine industry, you basically have a heat exchanger and run cold water through it to allow the charged air to be cooled prior to going to the engine meaning you increase the density of the air it’s no different to an air cooler except this gives better cooling

the unit on the yb is to small so I would bin it.

Blimey I have not see a charge cooler on a cossie for years.
I know that some escort cosworths came with them as std and they was built into the std intercooler on the hot side.

Personally as Mark has said I would bin it and fit a 500 type intercooler from Airtec or if going for more power in the future Pro alloy or Spec r.
Charge cooling is great in certain applications but not really for a road going car.

The system will be less cluttered and your temps will be less, also you have removed a restriction.

I would deal with one issue at a time or take it to a person who specialises in these.

IT will save you time and money.

Paul

both rad and cooler they may well work properly in other applications but they don’t on a yb as the system was never designed properly in the first place.

Agree with mark

I worked at pace and tested them on my car years ago ( 1999)
And they don't work
A 500 cooler works far better

The charge cooler is to small
And it should be running all the time

But a charge cooler on a rst or r5 worked
Well because they where 3 times the size

There more for cars where space is a issue

But back to the original question when does the pump kick in, should it be on with ignition or on when radiator fan kicks in

It will either be on a boost pressure switch or perm on it has nothing to do with the engine temp or Rad switch

Must be on boost then as it’s never on

will have to fit it to pipe out the side of the bonnet to see if it sprays out then

i suspect it’s not working though it is fitted to a relay so switch makes sense

As others have said fit a large intercooler, decent alloy radiator and a pre-turbo cooler in place of it and you should have no issues with cooling and a much less complicated and cluttered engine bay.

This ^^^
Tried tested and works well and what i and many others run.
On the other hand..
If you can get your charge cooler setup working well so the heat exchanger keeps temps down when your booting it then at least it would be different to the norm and i like that. Makes a good talking point when you pop the bonnet.

I don’t think I mentioned this is additional to a large alloy intercooler as well

The front alloy cooler is water cooled for the heat exchanger on the charge cooler. The alloy cooler behind is for the turbo charged air and behind that is the standard water cooled engine rad

I measured the pump and it’s down to earth so ordered a new one

hopefully won’t have to worry where the signal comes from with a new one! It should just work!

Well fitted a bigger one and still doesn’t work on ignition, as it’s a heat exchanger I would expect t to work with ignition to ensure optimum cooling effect!

anyone have one or know somebody with one, where does it switch from!

thanks
