Default Fuel pump correct behavior

Hi All,

So ive been tracking some issues with my car.

So since i bought my car when i turn the ignition on i hear the fuel pump prime. While trying to sort other issues ive been testing sensors at the ECU end and found that the phase sensor and knock sensor were switched which explains a heap of performance issues ive been having so thats good.

However now my fuel pump doesnt prime until i crank the car. What is the correct behavior here? Also now the AMAL Valve doesnt get an earth from the ecu which it does if i switch the knock sensor and phase back to wrong. tested by earthing directly and it clicks as expected.

Since the fuel pump and Amal are on the same 12v then im assuming its related.

What do i need to start testing to sort this?

The fuel pump takes a switches Earth not live from
The car.

Pump should prime on key on, not cranking but maybe you have a switched live and not earth?

What a mess!

The pump primes upon the ignition being switched on, at the moment what you have isn't the definition of a prime!

It does so upon input from the CPS, it also references the CTS to determine what the duration should be.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by switched, i.e. each one incorrectly connected?

The phase sensor plug at the distributor was plugged into the knock sensor and the knock was plugged into the phase. It was like this from since ive bought it and only came across while testing continuity at the ECU and testing sensors.

So a little more ive found today is that when the phase senor is plugged in correctly the fuel pump does not prime with ignition on and the Amal valve doesnt get an earth signal from the ecu. When i unplug the phase sensor then the fuel pump primes and the amal valve works as its suppose to.

Car runs while the phase sensor is unplugged which thought was weird.

Any ideas?

The L8 can do a computation based on battery voltage to substitute the value of the phase sensor, whereas the absence of this input on it's predecessors will result in a non starter.

I would check the phase sensor itself, along with the wiring, as it's prone to corroding and shorting out.

Thanks Martin for that info.

I have checked the phase sensor and its setup correct and tests fine. Im not a whiz with the multimeter but ive checked for a short and it seems to be fine. I have ordered a terminal removal kit so ill run some direct wires to the ecu just to make sure its not a short from the phase sensor. Im hoping my testing for a short was wrong so this should prove that.

Hi,

So after adjusting my TPS from 0.25v to 0.14v at idle the fuel pump now primes. When my TPS was originally at 0.04v before i adjusted it my Amal valve click everytime i pressed the accelerator. Do you have any ideas why the TPS setting has a bearing on these?

Yes a bad TPS calibration will affect the operation of the Amal. It shouldn't affect the prime though.
