dodgy rev counter
just recently pretty much as the cold weather came ive noticed my 3 doors rev counter seems to be reading half or even less that what it should be, has anyone encountered this before?
may or may not be related but the stereo keeps intermittently switching itself off also

On the 3 doors the material that the tracks for the clocks are in at the rear of the clocks is famous for breaking the tracks, worth a look, but otherwise the tachos do die, pretty crap quality really, but can be fixed.

sounds like you might have a bad live feed to the fuse box or a bad earth from the battery to chassis. If either of these are not flowing power propperly you will have problems like rev counter reading wrong, stereo cutting out, heater fan not running, etc. Either that ot the alternator might be on its way out.
This damp, cold weather has a way of ampifying electrical faults!

Is your charge warning light working ok ?, the first things to suffer are the things that have a motor, such as heater and wipers, as very voltage sensitive, then next the tacho will stop working before the rev counter stops, had this on my xr4i, I experimented to see how far I could get with no charge, wipers slowed to almost stopping then tacho went out about 5 miles before spluttering to a stop, fuel pump wasn't affected as was running lpg.
It would be well worth running another live cable direct from the alt B+ to the battery +, as you can lose a decent amount of voltage due to wire age, a bad one could pick up 1 1/2 volts doing this.

batt light comes on when started then a blip of the throttle puts it out its charging at 13.9v at idle with load i only changed the batt as it was knackered when i bought the car in febuary and would go flat if left for a few days but if driven every day would be fine so i presume its charging ok. is there a test i can do on the alt wiring with a multimeter at all? like a resistance check if so what readings should i be looking for
