Does the pump sound like it's working? May be a blockage in the low pressure fluid feed pipe.

Sounds more like it's losing pressure, hence the pump running all the time. You could try changing the "bomb" first.

As jon@work says is the pump running, making a whirring sound ?, it should stop after 20-30 seconds or so, if it doesn't there is a problem and if it runs continuously it's going to make it kin hot as it's not supposed to, has a very hard job to do.
If not whirring to start with and getting hot it is seized, so just have a listen, they're not quiet so will easily hear it even with bonnet shut.

just been looking on ebay and there looks to be a few variations on the abs/pump unit even though all say 2wd, as where brake pipes go etc?

I've had one fail before. Sympton was no fluid coming from the three outlets where the brake lines connect. May be worth taking these off and pressing the pedal to see if fluid is flowing OK. If not, change the unit.

I'm sure reman can rewind the pumps/motor so they are as good as new.
