Default Clutch Options- circa 380bhp

Hi, im going to be upping the power off my 2wd saff to around 380bhp - was wondering about options for the clutch? One that can handle it but also drivability round town etc.
Any info and advise?

Hi Fraser,

I has a AP Paddle in my 450bhp Saff and it was fine, have the same clutch now in my 3dr and it's spot-on, can be abit jerky in traffic if you get me?? but does it's job..

I think Alcon also do a nice clutch too..

Controversial!

I've got 355hp at the wheels (dyno printout) and I'm using a Transit clutch

Works fine

Have launched it and it's perfect

Great in traffic too

Stop wasting money on OTT clutches and get a Transit one for cheap as chips

Only mod I had to make was drill the pressure plate locating pin holes out by .5mm

Booyaa!! I SAID it!

Yea, id herd about the Alcon and AP 6paddle ones- thanks Pete. I think Woodford do a combo of one of these plates with a standard cover? might be an inbetween option.

Just im abit weary as i have an Exeedy in my similar power Subaru and it judders like a b**ch. But I know that clutch/car combo is guilty of this.

English - im interested to hear more about that transit clutch?
which model Transit is it from? Drive plate splines fit fine? no real slippage?

Hi Fraser,

Yes mate Woodford is a good place to buy them from, i've used them for many parts mate...

I also agree with you on the Exeedy too mate, had one of my 500bhp Evo and it really juddered too...

AP 6 Paddle with standard plate i find good though mate..

I've known std clutches on 400bhp without problems, I'm just trying to get a decent one with no springs in it, as they rattled thier tits off in the std Borg & Beck(AP) one that was in there.

When I bought my 3dr many moons ago I killed the clutch that was in it. As I was feeling alittle broke due to just buying the car I had a rummage around in the parts department where I was working at the time (it was once a Ford dealership so had lots of old odds and sods left over from 70's and 80's) and I found an asbestos clutch listed for a 70's tranny....one of the best clutches for feel that I ever fitted to my 3dr, did smell a bit odd at times though lol

Thats the same set up Im currently running, bit naff in traffic but no where near as bad as AP four paddles.

Mr Sheads suggestion is the best one so far for the OP's spec

The clutch I got is asbestos free

I took my old clutch (listed as RS500 spec) into a clutch specialist and he looked at it and realised it looked really similar to a Transit one

He tested the pressure plate pressure, and then pulled out a transit one, tested that and it was pretty similar

The transit clutch plate also had a double row of rivets holding the friction material on and the original clutch only had a single row

Think about it! A fully laden transit is gonna need one HELL of a clutch!

Surely it can pull a Cossie off the line no probs!

I'm liking the sound of the tranny clutch!..you're rite in what you say about it needing to be strong to pull a fully laden tranny...which model tranny was it off as this has me intrigued!

I am SO good to you guys!

Just rang Tony @ Clutch Systems in Chritchurch New Zealand - very knowledgeable (+64 3366 8442)

He said the clutch was one they made up for a local Ford dealer as they were having problems with their Transit clutches

The cover is a generic 240mmm cover made by a Turkish company called Don Mez

The Don Mez part numbers are as follows:

Cover: DM 040 948
Plate: DM 040 012

Use a normal release bearing, or uprated one if you can get one

So far, I have used this clutch with no problems. It doesn't seem to bite as hard as my last one, and when I questioned Tony about this, he said it won't, but it will bite a little harder as it wears.

Something to do with the fingers of the pressure plate sitting quite flat when it releases?

Obviously, use this setup at your own risk, but so far I can say that at 355 dyno HP @ 6500RPM, 25PSI, I've had no problems, and it's a very driveable clutch. I've had wheelspin in third gear too (scary fooking shyte sideways at that speed, then overcorrected, managed to get it back on the straight and narrow!)

Remember that I also had to drill the locating holes on the cover by .5mm and it went on pretty snugly at that

Have to say that I prefer the Alcon 6 paddle to the AP, much lighter. Perhaps I need to carry a spare cable now though

I know Tabetha! I dread it when a parts department asks me what kind of car it is! So many generic items will do the job as well or better
