What is it with people saying GT Series Turbos are WEAK??

I think a GT3071 would be a great option on your car Steve, may even go that route myself if the T3 SHITS itself......

Steve,

Serious question, what is your goal for the car?? 450+ with 400+ torque??

I,d consider a diff too Steve, especially cus i know you like the Pod now & again.... it never stops does the ŁŁŁ mate....

Or just ask Doug if he,ll PX your car with some cash his way

Fair answer Steve......

Surely a well mapped T34.63 car is faster enough though mate??

My old saff with 450+ brake imo was abit too much for the road, i loved my T34 setup peaking @ 33psi, was bloody fast that car, best road tune spec imo...

They do with the right cams etc, Dave,s aka MAD-YUM made 400+ ft/lb on his T38 with over 460bhp....

Mine wasn,t great on mine, it made 456bhp but only 358ft/lb not that 358 is shy mind you, BUT it could of been made better if i,d of pissed about with the spec etc..

[QUOTE=Staffi.;4585320]What is it with people saying GT Series Turbos are WEAK??

Pete the GT30 turbo suffers from high EGT(exhaust gas temperatures)as a result melts the core.Plus they are throw away once blown where as a T4 is rebuildable at a reasonable price.

Didn,t know that Lee, cheers for the info fella....

Is this VERY common then Lee as i,ve not seen a great load of threads on this happening to many GT Turbos...

dont think it happens aften pete but they defo dont like anti lag or launch control or i suppose lots of back pressure, for the above reasons that lee has put!problem with the gt turbos it that thye have a narrow oil feed (compared to the t-series)which i suppose could be seen as a poss weak area!

Plus they are a throw away item!which in many cases aint going to be a problem!

Pete have you still got the graph for yours?

I have mine and one of Riches, could post them all up as they were all done on a DD IIRC so will all be pretty acurate to each other.

Would give people an idea of how the cars drive and how the power comes in.

Hi Kev,

Kev, they were Karls own cams mate, remember though when Karl built the engine for Jim it was specced (spelling) for a T4 as Jim had bought one, BUT didn,t put it ont the car.. and sold it/px,d it to UT for a T38 mate...

Pete, both Karl Norris and Vince at CR Turbos told me about the GT problems with the core melting due to high EGT.However Karl did say it's all down to which exhaust size housing you go for.
Vince however did say that he has had quite a few of these GT series that failed and some not very happy customers due to this.
Me personally I would take tha advise of a turbo expert(Vince) and opt for the ball bearing t4 myself.

Hi James,

Yes it was specced for a T4 pal, hence why it wasn,t great, yeah i was going to get the cam/s changed but never did becuase i was going to go for a full build again, but obviously things changed etc..

I'm in the same position at the moment, cant decide wether to keep my TT T38 and have headwork/cams to suit etc, or to go T4 and sell my T38, i want more power but want it to be driveable and responsive as well.

How different is the r/b T4 compared to the "normal" T4 in terms of coming on boost etc?

Vince has offered me a very good deal on a normal T4, would it be worth spending the extra on the r/b one?

Mine:

Lower graph is the low boost run and the drop off on the higher run is due to the boost hose popping off.

BHP

Torque

The GT30 turbo's I have run have been faultless, So this is not what I am seeing,
I have only seen 1 GT30 fail and this was because it was not water cooled and over 6 years ago and have never seen a fault since.

Now i am running one of Marks inlet cams i will get it on the rollers again.

Steve - Many people are using the GT series turbos and no problems. Yes they have to be water cooled and yes you have to run a dump valve but you would be foolish not to on a T4 as well - certainly the dump valve anyway.
