Default Sparkplug gap 071c

Hi guys,

we have been building my brothers Sierra 4x4 engine from scratch. It's build up with 100% original Ford or improved parts from Mike Rainbird and will be pushing 270 bhp max (may be a bit lower).

The plugs we use are Motorcrafts 071c's but we are wondering at wich gap we need to set them? We've been told around 0.9 mm.

FYI we use new motorsport leads + new dizzycap, rotorarm, fuel pump etc

Regards

a typically used gap for these plugs that seems to work for most people is 0.6-0.65mm

That is OK for all specs of engines? Think most people use these gaps with higher specs. Can anyone confirm?

I would use as jon says, 0.6mm, the std coil on the sapphys is not particularly good, unless you have fitted the excellent "group a" coil ?

I use this plugs, and a Mallory higfire 6al, grpA coil, and 10mm plug cables. I run whit 1.0mm gap on 1.8bar pressure whitout problem. Much better idle, and burn better all the way

They can be opened up when using a group a coil, and I also found it very beneficial in smoothness and idle quality, I ran 0.9mm.

Or go wasted spark and run bigger gaps abd getba better idle imo.

This is cheaper than wasted spark, and works well

If going coilpack for a better idle, may as well go the whole hog and get a better ecu that has idle smoothing with ignition.
