very true; although i like to see the cambelt and tensioner all the time incase you see a split in the belt or something

you cant do that with a cover on

but i think its asking to get chippin's stuck in the belt without the covers on!
Would worry me not having a cover over the belt.

ive never had a cover on any of my cossies and ive done over 100k in them..never had any issues at all, imo there isnt enough room for anything nasty to get up behind the rad

exposed belt and hardcore pulleys look the nuts

IMO its always best to be able to see the cambelt in case there is a problem with it - plus they look better without the cover

cambelt covers are

The cover hides problems! My cover hid a nice big bit of swarf that slowly scratched away at the cambelt. I don't have ABSOLUTE proof that this caused my cambelt failure, but that cost me Ł1350 quid and since then I have had the power steering gear rubbing on the belt, and I diagnosed that partly by the smell of burning rubber, but also of course seeing the visible wear on the cam belt.

Whatever. I have paid for the belt snapping, and since then I run without a belt cover. Make your own mind up. It's YOUR money.

Looking far more like an engine now
timing belt on and timed up, all electrics are done, most hoses are on (not all though!)
and alot of other stuff, just waiting on a new bottom pulley now, put some fluids in and we should be all systems go!

heads been off and skimmed and fully rebuilt.
Good to hear, its definatly trying to fire!

Heres some full on pics........

nicked off another forum, so some of the writing wont make sense.....

How it was

inlet off

Havn't touched these, inlet ports look like new!

and in this and the last pic, you can see where the water has been going!

headgasket, anyone?

and new spankly(ish) bit!

Also found the cause of the missfire, the Dizzy cap and rotar arm are both knackered, suprised it ran at all!

The cam's and followers ETC look in very good nick!

In the cam cover was very clean, no gunk at all!

Cleaned the dump valve up and fitted the new filter (fooking rip off that was!)

Made a start on running trial fitting the breather system

You can see some of the new black sfs hoses

and a sticker, that made me laugh!

you know you can get rid of that shitty kidney box dont you?; you dont need it if you have a breather pot

just get rid of the lot; use this adapter http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RS-Cosworth-Pi...1%7C240%3A1318

She's alive!
After it ate 2 starters trying to get it going, we thought fuck it, and dragged the bitch down the road.
That worked, but it sounded a right bag of shite!
after checking the timing again, found it was out a tooth, so we moved it, checked it, then it looked like it was out a tooth again! Which boggled us, then we looked at the old pulley, and noticed that its had a tip ex mark on one of the timing lugs, rather than on the groove, so we tried it in that position (which seems to be 1 tooth advanced) and bingo, she runs like a dream! Do the pulleys not line up with the marks on all cossies, or is mine just bonk?
Oh, and she's holding about 30 psi oil pressure on warm idle, not bad

i had to change the actuator rod anyway, had to mount the actuator on the standard mount instead of the clamp one, so i wound it right off, should run nearly no boost i think, but i will check!
