Looking to buy Mondeo TD
Hi all, my brother is looking to buy a turbo diesel mondeo. As fully loaded a possible. He is on a budget, so looking at 2004 model (ish). Just looking for some pointers really. Is there anything to start clear off? Common faults, most reliable engine & size etc etc.
Cheers

Here we go! All the know it alls will be on shortly harping on about dmfs and injectors!
I have an ST tdci with a full cobra exhaust system and I love it! As with all cars they have their faults, but with so many of them on the road you hear about the faults more often!

I've recently picked up a mk3 diesel, it's an early one with the TDDI engine so shouldn't suffer with costly injector issues. Got a few things to tidy up on it but it's a good little car, I've done 300 miles in it and the fuel gauge isn't at half way yet. Only paid 500 quid for it too!

Frying pan, fire!!
There are loads of very reliable 2.0 TDCis about, but unfortunately when they do go wrong, it's seldom a cheap fix (as with pretty much all modern common rain diesels with DPFs).
My advice would be to NOT go on the mileage, but to only get one that had already had the injectors, and clutch/DPF work already carried out. Getting one with a low mileage is a false economy, if you then encounter Ł1000+ in bills because it's not already had the work done.
There does seem to be less issues with the 2.2, but then there are less of them about, so less stories of failure.

if u get a tdci 2.0 get the facelift model they dont suffer with injectors as much so dont go near pre 2003 as they are the crap ones also be worth thinking about getting a ghia or st as my mate has a ghia 56 plate and its brilliant on diesel and if u wana tow it does high 30s so not bad really and the st are just good looking get a decent 2.0 and u can get 2.2 injectors remap and its just as quick as st

TDDis don't have the same issues, and later TDCis had revised injectors so are less prone to problems than earlier TDCis (which I think is what he means)

Someone i know had a 2.0 Tddi and drove it until 450k with original injectors, think it had a few clutches until someone crashed into it and wrote it off. Tho i know its the tdci has the injector issues.
I have a 2006 2.2 ST and just about to replace the DMF and clutch at 100k. Tho DMF and clutch is same issue on modern diesel. The injectors in the 2006 are not meant to give as much bother as the earlier ones.
