I've got my xr on the road to iron out any running issues, and I've got a problem that i need help with.

When I give it some strap for prolonged periods the engine starts tapping and its sounds like a subaru i.e misfiring? what could this be? sticking valve, knackered oil pump? when i lay off and drive normally after a time it sorts itself out and runs fine.

Any ideas?

Sticky hydraulic tappit, i over rev`d my cvh to 8500rpm and it started missing on 1 cylinder, checked tappits on that cylinder and found a fk`d tappit, replaced it and it fine....

How would i know which tappet it was? would I have to take them all out?

also how hard are they to change?. that head doesnt have to come off does it?

They are easy to change, ud be better to change the lot, and change the oil aswel. Get a haynes manual it guides u through it, just keep the rockers in order when removing them, and ud prob better get a new cam cover gasket.

it could be black death, this is when your oil has bits off crap in it, what happens after a while is the oil pick up strainer in the sump gets covered in shite and then this stops oil circulation to the top end of your engine causing oil starvation to your hydraulic tappets making your car sound like "A SUBARU" to cure this i would take of your engine sump and clean all the crap out also clean the oil stainer pipe and give it a nice oil and filter change

Stick some WYNNS engine flush in for a few hundred miles first, this will clean all the crap out.
Then do as suggested and change the whole set of tappets, make sure you use decent ones, rockers will be fine.
