Exclamation ST170 ABS Dash Light has come on

Hi, I have just changed all my Shocks, Springs and wheel bearings, but I have just taken it out for a test drive and the ABS / Traction control light has come on.

N.B. when I reassembled the front hubs I had great difficulty in replacing the front ABS sensors, it seamed that there wasn't enough room to push the sensors back in, so I shaved off some of the plastic and accidentily exposed some metal parts, however the sensors now fitted quite easily.

Questions...does the sensor need to be really tight when in place?
Does it matter if there is some metal exposed on the sensor?
Is this a comon issue of the sensor being difficult to fit?

Probably fucked the sensor 'shaving' it so it will need to be replaced. They are a tight fit and are meant to fit snug in the hole, take out your old sensors, wire brush inside the hole, then use a bit of emery paper on it, copper slip, and slide your new sensors in.

Sensor needs to be tight in the hole or it will get a faulty reading and cause the light to come on!

One more thing to mention.

Have you got the correct whel bearing and have you fitted them the right way round as the abs ring is in one side of the bearing??!!
If not fitted correctly the sensor won't be able to detect the ring.

Default Orientation

Hi, I had the wheel bearing fitted by someone else, so have to believe he put them in the right way.

So the bearing has a ABS pick up ring!, as I didn't fit them I didn't see the bearing, is it internal or external, if internal, is it marked up which way to install it? if external, it should be self explanitory.

However I have just seen on You Tube a very simple point that should have been noted. Putting the internal Circlip 'Gap' at the top so not blocking the ABS sensor hole, which mine has done. So it's off with the hub and move circlip around. Doh...

Never done a bearing on mine so I couldn't tell you if they are marked up but any decent bearing will be and yes the pickup ring is internal. The other possibility (As I'm sure they are the same dimensions as the other focus models) is they might have fitted non abs bearings.

Yes circlip possition does help lol. Once you've sorted thi and tried sensors that are known to be good and it still doesn't work then the bearings are your next thing to try. Would be worth talking to the place who got them anyway though and finding out exactly what they bought.

Default Sensors Changed

I have now changed the two front ABS sensors, by pushing Drice shaft back as far as I could get it to go and then moved the circlip around , so the ABS hole wasn't blocked.

But the lights are still on. I have disconnected the batery for 5 mins, but this didn't turn them off. I am going to a garage this morning and seeing if they can clear the codes and then we can see if there are any problems still.

I spoke with the guy who pressed the bearings in and he put them back in the same way they cam out, black ring the same place,

I'll keep you posted

It will also throw up a no signal fault code if the ABS ring is missing, check for that!

Also who the hell charged you Ł70 for a new sensor!

Hi, can't change sensor yet, pissing down with rain here.

There is no visible pick up ring.

I also need to check wiring as it was difficult to disconnect them last night and I may have broken connections, hopefully not.

I got the sensor from Unipart, Ford dealer price for sensor is @ Ł89.

Default All donenow

Sorry, guys for taking so long to come back...with an update...

It turned out that the new sensor I bought was faulty, I returned it and got my money back.

I subsequently bought two used ones, from a trusted source of ST170 Spares, Jeremy at Moretonhampstead.

After different trials we isolated that the problem was with the O/S/F corner, sensor or bearing.

I did a continuety test on the cable, and all was was good, so it was the bearing.

Anyway I took the hub off and when trying to remove the flange we destroyed the new bearing, so as I bought a second hand hub we used it and all was well.

There are no lights on now.

Thanks for all the advice.

Glad its sorted. Common mistake using the wrong bearing or fitting it the wrong way round.
