Default ST170 Brake Upgrade

Hi,

Im looking at upgrading the brakes on my 1.8 focus.

im looking at getting hold of some front brakes discs for the st170 and brake pads from st170 (or mk3 mondeo if they fit). I also will need the mk3 mondeo caliper (does this always come with carrier/knuckle?)

Is there anything else i would need for the front conversion? (replacement hubs?)

Also wot is required for rears as i have drums at the moment.

Your help is appreciated

Matt

go on to pumaspeeds web site they sell the conversion kit. Will tel ya wot part's u need or just buy it from them. For my rear's i just bought a disc rear axle and stripped off the parts needed. And Ur'll also need a new hand brake cable. Pretty simple conversion a day's work will see em both done.

Yes you will also need the st170 front knuckles to go with the calipers, discs and pads!

pumaspeed will sell you the kit, but will charge you twice what it should cost (and for that money you could fit brembo's or asbo 320mm brakes)

the full kit you need is for sale here:

https://passionford.com/forum/ford-s...ml#post4741069

(calipers, disks, pads, caliper carriers, bolts, washers)

Doesn't look like that includes the front knuckles that you also need to change as the st170 ones are a lot different to other focus models!

If you do not want to change your knuckles fit any 300mm disk size mondy caliper i think all mondeos have the same calipers, it will bolt straight to your knuckle then use ST170 disks and mondeo pads

Sp3np - are you telling that Mondeo MK3 calipers fit non-ST Focus knuckles? I've always thought knuckles are a must... could you verify?

Is it possible to simply fit a 300mm disc and keep the existing calliper set up? Will this bring a noticeable difference?

Im sure mondeo 300mm calipers fit straight onto non focus ST knuckles you may have to drill the caliper mounting hole by 2mm but thats it. ST170 calipers have a seperate carrier that bolts to the ST170 knuckle, the mondeo does not, the caliper bolts straight to the knuckle.
So you need MK3 mondeo calipers and pads, ST170 disks.

you can not fit a bigger disk to a standard mk1/1.5 focus as the pad carriers are cast into the knuckles and physically stop the use of a bigger disk!

to go bigger you have to fit st170 knuckles. i've done this conversion on my 2l and its well worth it.

some have used mk3 mondeo callipers aswell but always have to use st170 knuckles. i'm not sure how the calliper mounts on the mk3 modeo as i've never done my dads brakes to find out but i'd assume there would be a mounting bracket for the calliper that bolts to the knuckle.

there are advantages to going with the mondeo calliper

1. it can deliver a larger force as the piston is bigger although it does require a greater movement of the beak pedal to get the same travel from the piston. this really wont be noticeable though
2. the pads i think are slightly bigger so more friction = more breaking power
3. their cheaper.

disadvantage. not as big a range of performance pads.

there shockin aint they? ford were really trying to save a bit of cash on the normal focus. glad they spent the extra on the rear suspension though otherwise it would just be a heavy escort!!!!

as far as im aware m8 i think you will need the st170 knuckles. They are quite hard to get hold of here unless you pay good money for them, thats why i didnt bother with the upgrade

if you go with the st knucles you can fit virtually any other brake disc option to your car, including the asbo one

using the mondeo caliper though means that the caliper bracket that comes with it is slightly different in it's offset so you may find it won't quite line up and you may need to shave a bit off

it would be nice to see a normal focus hub against the st version

Yeah thanks for th replies, however, the question wasn't quite answered.

I was looking at mondeo mk3 knuckles and they look like the ST170 knuckles.

Are they the same knuckles because Ford has a history of parts sharing so I thought that the mk3 mondeo knuckles was where they got the front brakes for the ST170 from.

Here are some links to help.

Mondeo mk3 knuckles

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-MONDEO-2-...8#ht_844wt_905

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MK3-MONDEO-01-...#ht_1212wt_905

St170 knuckle

any help to stop my confusion would be great.

cheers

No, they're not the same, they're 'the next size up' in terms of the shock absorber clamp...there may be other differences so it's best to get the ST170 stuff.

not to mention the mondeo hub is 5 stud.

just keep an eye out on ebay and in breakers for st170 hubs/knuckles and take your pick of either st170 or mondeo callipers.

Yeah

A comparison between the two would be good.

Just for curiosity sake.
