Default ST170 Gearbox problem/issue

Hello.

Just recently I've started having a problem with the gearbox in my 54 reg ST170.

I've noticed that when pulling off from junctions and traffic lights etc that the car occasionally (and getting more regular) 'slips out' of 1st gear leaving me sat there in neutral with the engine revving and not moving anywhere.

Just wondered if anyone else had had this problem or may know what it is and how to sort it out?

Thanks.

Craig

probably a worn syncromesh in the gear box, most reconditioners can sort it for you.

Thanks for the quick reply.

As an estimate, how much would I be looking at to get it fixed if this is the problem?

Thanks

Thanks for the replies.

The car was in and out of the garage after a few hours yesterday morning with a bill of Ł38 with a future bill of about Ł50.

It turns out that the cogs for Reverse, 1st, 3rd and 5th weren't fully selecting properly, so they adjusted the cables and adjusted a few other things (none of which I'll prob understand) and now everything is selecting fine.

They've recommended I have the gearbox serviced and the oil in it changed as the gears not selecting fully may've ground down some of the cogs and left small deposits of metal in there, so aside from this everything appears to be fine

I was going to suggest the cables! They can stretch over time, my old focus needed them re-adjusting.

As you say, a gearbox oil change would be a good idea, I don't advise doing it yourself as gearbox oil STINKS!!

I wouldn't have any sort of clue how to do it myself, so I'll take it back to the garage that sorted it out for me.

1 of the guys there has an ST, so atleast I know he knows what he's on about

I would say things could be far from fine, if there is shards of metal in your gearbox the damage will have been done already, the gearbox wont last long and a new second hand box will cost you a few hundred. I have to agree with above gearbox oil stinks like eggs farts its foul. Personally i would think your gearbox will be fine, sounds like they were trying to scare you into an oil change. Least your clutch is ok, you need to re mortgage to get that fixed.

Hi all, I purchased a focus ST170 about 6 months ago & having a few problems, I have a scratching sound when I switch off the engine ( around the oil pressure gauge area )
Engine sounds tappy/ticking
Vibrating accelerator pedal above 80 mph
Some loud knocking noise, not sure where it's coming from but sounds really rough on idle. The noise goes when I apply the clutch, have fitted a new clutch & slave valve cyli nder. Dual mass flywheel was slightly worn but ok. Have been told this sounds normall for the st170 & it's the 5th gear idle in the gearbox but I am not convinced.
I would be grateful for any help on these problems or advice
