Default ERST doesnt seem to want to warm up...?

Hey guys, i noticed ever since i bought the car (about 2 weeks)...when cruising in the ERST, the temp stays VERY VERY VERY low...sometimes not even starting to go into the WHITE!! is this normal?

even when i give the car a bit of a thrashing, the temp enters around the white area (sometimes just above if i drive it hard then stop all of a sudden) but hardly ever goes above the white...is this usual or is something wrong?

if i am in traffic for AGES...the temp does rise to about a quarter, and once i start driving again, it drops back down to the white area...again sometimes under it!!

the engine has not had ne mods done to it apart from exhaust and airfilter...apart from that, its standard...is also running standard boost and intercooler and chip...

ne one know if this is normal? or is something wrong?

to start with that just a water temp gauge not a engine temp or act gauge!

so when u move it will dropp right off! as cold air is flowin in2 the rad!

but it should go up to around 1/2 way when its left still for a eriod of time!

I would have a loook @ the sensor mayb giv the wire a lil giggle c if that moves it!

But it measures the temperature of the water in the cylinder head, not the temperature of the water in the radiator.

As for the problem, it's either a faulty thermostat, thermostat housing or temp sensor. If you let the car idle stationary fo ra moment, does the fan kick in at about 3/4 of the temp scale. If so, then the temp sensor is most probably ok.

If the engine is not just flowing too much water, then it's definately something from with the setup, like running really rich or spark advance totally of, but I really doubt it.

Yes, that seems to be running cool, as above, does the fan kick in @ 3/4 ish if left on idle? You may want to investigate your thermostat, maybe it needs replacing or the rubber seal has gone, which does often happen. IS the fan on ignition live, i.e always running, i know a few ppl do this. it should defintaely be higher temps than you say, even at coolest i would say it should sit at 1/4 the way up.

mine's like BlackS2's said, sits at about the quater mark whilst driving constant, then if i stop it'll rise to three quaters and the fan will cut in!

ok left the car idling and the fan cuts in at just over 1/2 way up the gauge...the temp stayed at a constant 1/4 while driving today but that was in traffic...once i got moving again...it dropped back to the while at the bottom of the gauge...

is it being normal? or should i start replacing things?

Better replace the thermostat then (doesn't cost moch at least) and while doing so check that the housing still has the palstic flow limiter in the thermostat bypass channel. Missing this would cause a lot of flow around the thermostat even if closed.
