leaking sump gasket

recently my car has developed an oil leak and it has been diagnosed as coming from the sump gasket.
i took the car to my local garage who replaced the gasket with a new one.
it was fine for the first day or so but has since then started leaking again.
the car has been to the garage 3 times now for the same problem and it is still leaking.
does anybody have any ideas or suggestions as how to stop it leaking.
the people in the garage gave the usual lines "its an old car you can't expect it not too leak any oil" and "if it leaks again bring it back and we'll have a look"
i know for a fact that the car shouldn't be leaking ANY oil and it wouldn't do if not for the sump gasket - fact.
they are a good garage and i believe they do the job to the best of their ability but it is still leaking and im getting fed up of having to go back to them every other day.
can anybody help me?

sure it isn't a rusty sump to blame??
I took mine in to have sump gasket done, guy said it was rusty and changed it, genuine ford parts, sump was £90+vat and gasket £30+vat, but aint had a leak since!

i wouldn't know to be completely honest mate im brand new to the RS scene so i wouldn't know what a rusty sump looked like.

just been to take some photos. was a bit dark so this is the best photo that came out...
it doesn't look rusty but the photo does highlight my leaking problem!

lol, i aint no mechanic, but by the looks of it, the sump looks fine.
Are they using a genuine ford sump gasket?
better than some mickey mouse cheapo version

looking at the receipt (sp?) the sump gasket itself only cost £12.
compared to the price you paid it look as if they have used el cheapo parts on it.
would it really make much of a difference if they didn't use genuine Ford stuff.....?
surely its the same product but different name?

i would only go with genuine ford stuff unless its made by a performance company. I had a pattern sump gasket and its still slightly leaking but i can live with it but as a above your better of using a genuine gasket and the last thing to try is get a new sump but they aint cheap.

This subject of leaking sump gaskets has been discussed here a few times.One lad (I cant remember who
) had very good success by 1st glueing the gasket to the sump using some impact adhesive.Let it dry 100% and then offering up the sump to the block,he siad it works every time,so maybe something to try.Also,dont over tighten the bolts that hold on the sump,as it squeezes the gasket out of shape.Torque wrench setting are 8-11 Nm or 6-8 lbf ft.Regards Micky

sump gaskets can be notoriously difficult to change due to them being fiddly to keep in place when offering up the sump! one of the best ways is to saw the hexagonal head off some 6mm bolts,then cut a slot into them so you can turn them with a screwdriver. screw these into everyother hole in the block so they act as guidance stud's.
then screw all the bolts in and remove the studs,screw the rest of the bolts in and then tighten them to the correct torque settings! DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
this was the brief from Ford when the cvh engine first came out!

think im gonna get them to put a Ford gasket in.
is it possible to change the gaskget without draining the engine of oil.....
it doesn't leak enought to show up on the dipstick but the garage is becoming quite messy with little drops of oil all over the floor.
my parents aren't best pleased!

CVH sump gaskets are a nightmare to fit. Once my garage fitted a new one, but they forgot that the bolts need to be tightened very carefully.
So on the flywheel side the gasket popped into the sump and within 10 miles I lost 1 liter of engine oil......
Due to heavy smoke behind the car I saw something was wrong and stopped. I saw the oil running out of the sump, so I called the garage, checked the oil level and went back in a very slow pace
So oil drained, new gasket and it took them quite a while to keep it in place while fitting the sump. In the end I believe they used a kind of kit to fix it before fitting. But still I noticed it very easily slips out of the correct position.

update:
bought a sump gasket today from ford only cost £20 including VAT so was pleased.
its booked in to the garage on thursday and im gonna give them some silicone sealant to use with it.
hopefully this should do the trick.

i am the guy who explained in the other post how to do it without getting leaks, can i just say firstly DONT use silicone or any kind of sealant on that rubber gasket its the worst thing you can do,silicone will make the rubber slimey and it will spread and slip out of place when you tighten it up.
you need the gasket to be oil free and dry so it grips the 2 surfaces and stays in position.
i can guarantee you the best way to do a cvh sump gasket is to glue the gasket to the block first ( i use trim tack its in a spray can) and used for glueing trims,but works superb for this job and dries in minutes.(make sure the block is oil free obviously first before glueing into place)
then when the gasket is stuck to the block offer the sump up to it and re-fit the bolts,this way the gasket cant slip out of position as theres grooves each end for it to sit in aswell!!! you put the gasket on the sump first and it will slip off out of position every time i guarantee you.
it is worth getting a light and having a good look to see where the oil is coming from,as mentioned above,i have had a few sumps rotton and the oil leaking from the rusty surface of the sump and not the gasket,could be the crank seal leaking and running along the sump and dripping off,also check the cam oil seal behind the cambelt cover and make sure its not that running down from there.

As above, don't use silicone, the last last thing you want is little bits of silicone blocking up your oil pump pick up pipe. Also may be worth a quick check of the oil return from the turbo to block, these can also fail and with the starter motor being in the way can look like a sump gasket failier.

silicone will make the rubber slimey and it will spread and slip out of place when you tighten it up.
Not put on like your fitting a bath or shower tray.
I think thats the point we were trying to get across.
