Default newbie thats after a little help and advice!

im getting an rst next in the very very near futureand im after a little advice as this will be my first!

first off, my first job is, im after upgrading the cooling from the standard set up fairly cheaply, is there any way to do thisatall? ive seen a cossie cooler for sale thats modded to fit rstsand ive also seen something about using a cossie thermostat? but whats best, getting a bigger rad or bigger intercooler? im a bit unsure as to whatto do? can anyone advise?

secondly, im after a dumpvalve set up, i know that they are supposed to be not that good on rsts but i want one. ive seen all these different applications to put it in different places, which is the best place to put it? i.e chearge carrier over the crocker or boost hose (i think thats where it is?) whats the reasoning behind these different places?

and finnaly for now!!!!! what are they like on fuel, as im after using mine everyday and i can sometimes do a fair bit of distance to get to different places of work only doing 60 a day atthe mo so not too bad!

cheers, any help woulkd be appreciated, cheers! phil

If you get a big intercooler then this will reduce the air flow to the radiator, you radiator needs to be in good condition or you will end up with overheating problems. If the turbo is running standard or slightly increased boost pressure then the standard intercooler should cope.

The cossie thermostat opens a few degrees cooler than the standerd erst one, this will make the cooling system run a few degrees cooler (if everything else in in good condition - radiator etc)

Easiest place to fit a dump valve is in the hose from the intercooler outlet to the engine cross over pipe. You can either cut the standard hase and fit a 'T' piece or buy some uprated hoses with the dv outlet on the hose.

Fuel wise that are not the most economical cars on the road, however if left in standard trim you should be ok.

cheers moonie, where abouts in manchester are you?

so the cossie thermostat is a good idea then?

to be honest, not actually too bothered about fuel, just as long as its not stupid!

i think i shall look into the uprated pipe scenario then!

so the best thing to uprate is the rad then?

i doubt it will get massively modded, probably just a new gas flowed head and a cam aswell as a chip! the boost may get upped slightly?

the good thing about them is they are so easy to work on and fix yourself and mod yourself!, a stage 1 tune is a must nowadays to see the saxo chavs off, most are already at stage 1.

i have the reliable fairly economic car with the puma which is a bit unreliable at the mo??????? anyway, wanted an rst for a bit, id like to get the bhp up a little from standard, 170 seems like a good figure which should be obtained with the camchip and an airfilter im told, it already has a system on it!, the economics wont be a problem but i want it to be reliable yes! i shall be looking after it deffinately!

a stage one tune should be around 170 bhp on a good lump, 13 psi on a standard intercooler is the max u can go to really so i would buy a pace or a big grs/pro alloy to make sure your act's are ok.

stage 1 is basically a chip, and boost increase to 13/14psi,filter,magnex etc and a -31 and a setup for fueling dont think it includes a intercooler, cant remember many stages ago!!

I got a kent cvh 34 cam in mine, quite a good cam another is the piper t2 might be too much for a stage 1, id go for the cvh 34.

That is 100% sound advice, even in standard trim they break alot! Once you start modding them............you will find out!

As also said above they are a piece of piss to work on, just make sure when you do any mods to the engine, turbo, fuel system, ignition etc you get it checked over and set up properly.

Best thing you can do is read through various posts on this forum, you will learn LOTS!

The cooler on ebay looks like an ERST item (on its side), not sure whats going on with pipe/ t-piece
