Smile Engine and gearbox change

Hi, gonna be swapping out engine and gearbox in my standard 89 rst in a couple of months. Gonna be taking then out together from underneath and replacing with an a standard engine ive already got but still need to find a recon lsd box.

Was wondering if anyone could recomend somewhere for a recon box?
want to spend about £300

Also if anyone has any hints or tips for engine and gearbox removal and refitting

cheers for your time

A local gearbox repairer can probably add a lsd to your box, so keep your eye out for a faulty or cheap rst gearbox on here or ebay.

If your dropping the engine and box out together remove the anti roll bar and mounts, other than thats should be pretty straight forward if you have a hoist etc.

Just make sure the car is safely on axle stands etc.

Thanks for the replys
Was hoping to buy an already recon'd box and just sell on both units once out

Is there a recommended place to go for a ready to go gearbox?
&
Do higher reach axle stands make the job easier? or will normal ones do?

Cheers again

Unless you only plan on running stock power or only a few BHP more £300 is a big waste of money on a BC gearbox, they really are quite weak and don't last long when pushed.
If you can find a low mileage IB5 gearbox (MK5 Escort, Diesel van, etc.) then get someone to drop your LSD in it this is a better shout and less money too.

Was wondering about the gear ratios..are they pretty much the same?

and to put the lsd in would be a pretty striaght forward job for the right guy?

Cheers again

That is the correct IB5 box (front starter and cable clutch) but it's very expensive for what I would say has just been cleaned and painted! lol I may be wrong but IMO there's no way it's been rebuilt for that money, the rebuild kit, ebay fee's and postage would come to £130 alone!

Diesel ratio's are long so I wouldn't use them (some people don't mind but not me), you can use the diesel casing with 1.3 Ka gears as this is almost identical to the original RST box or you can hold out for a base spec (not XR3i etc.) MK5 Escort IB5 box as these are also similair.

ok then spoke to the guy and all seemed good until i mentioned the fact that I wanted to drop my lsd in....he mentioned there may be an issue with my lsd fitting inside, maybe spline size or something?!? (it was hard to understand him)

just wanna check for sure that the lsd will literally fit sraight into the Mk5 diesel box 1992-97

Thank you

He's hardly going to tell you that actually they are not rebuilt is he? lol But it's up to you mate, he must be getting the parts really cheap if they genuinely are rebuilt, or he's doing it for pennies.
But yes the LSD will 100% fit in, I've done this many times, you fit the larger IB5 diff bearing and the crown wheel to the LSD and bolt it all back together.

I had to have the crown wheel machined when I fitted a BC LSD to my Puma gearbox
