Default Really lost it regarding turbos

Hello guys,

As i was struggeling with my engine my turbo is also suspected from failing now. I was already looking to change my turbo back to a standard one, while mine is laggy too at the moment.

The story is that I bought a hybride turbo when i was 17 thinking bigger is better

Now a lot of years later i know much better and think my car will be happier with a different turbo. Only i lost it completly in the info that i have

My current turbo info:
Model number TB03
TOB32 (i Expect this to be my turbine wheel?)
T03B axle
exhausthousing .48
inlethousing Z32 + compressor wheel

What trim is the compressor wheel?

I think the Z32 is from a Nissan with twin turbo's. The only thing i can find on the inlet is 10-16, but no trim. Anybody that is into turbo's that can help me with the trim and maybe even a compressor map?

Besides that i got another thing. The upper turbo is a T3 turbo cause it has the exhaust flange style that fits a CVH right?

So many T3 turbo's are a complete different spec? There can be two T3 turbo's who don't have the same compressor, not the same turbine. Or is this untrue?

Is it right that the standard RS Turbo is
TB0355
Compressor housing - .42
Compressor wheel - 45 trim.
Exhaust housing A/R .36
Exhaust wheel - not sure probably 68

What is the best way to go for me. Swap the exhausthousing for a .36 of just get a std turbo? I assume that when i swap the housing i'm still on a low compressor efficiency right?

My spec is currently that i'm running about 200 bhp with 0.9 boost pressure

Can you list your engine spec? Will make it easier to suggest a different turbo

Engine spec is
1600 8v
Chipped ECU [Chip brand i'm not sure of]
Flowed head
285t camshaft
Airtec intercooler

Do you maybe know how the T3 is defined Billy? It can be many different turbo specs isn't it?

if your not looking for anymore power but responce then fit a stage 2 rs turbo t3 with .36 rear housing for maximum punch

but if you want it to pull right to the limiter then fit either a stage 2 t3 with .48 rear housing or a stage 3 t3.48

i would go the stage 2 route and have a much more responsive car

Depending on the turbo I suppose there could be any number of combination of different sizes regarding turbos.

Instead of getting too caught up and confused with which size is which.

Maybe try a stage 2 or 3 hybrid garratt t3. You will notice the difference straight away and will wonder why you didn't change it a long time ago

Let us know how you get on

To help you hunt a little. Often people class a cosworth 2wd turbo as a stage 2 on an RS Turbo and a 4wd cosworth turbo as a stage 3. Both have different exhaust housings fitted.

Personally, if I was happy with 200bhp I would be looking at something small from the GT range, GT2554 maybe.

So what is the trim and A/R of a stage 2 turbo then? is a stage 3 compareable with my hybride?

I'm just not only after the hunt of a different turbo, but i just want to understand the whole turbo selection and it's parameters

Is the standard turbo too small for my engine spec?

The A/R of all RST T3's is the same, .42. It's the wheel inside that changes size, 45, 50, 55 or 60 trim.
The turbine wheel remains the same size but has these housings available, .36 (Stock) and .48.

Cosworth T3's also have a 60 A/R compressor housing available, .55 and .63 turbine housings too.

So if i'm correct all standard RS Turbo's are trim 45 unless somebody makes it a hybride and decides to go bigger on compressor trim. Or is there a change that you can buy two stock turbo's with different trim on comp?

I found this about the 2wd and 4wd
2wd
.48 turbine A/R
.42 compressor A/R
57 trim compressor
Unsure of turbine

4x4
.48 turbine A/R
.42 compressor A/R
60 trim compressor
Unsure of turbine...

For me it would be good to find out my compressor trim and A/R as i might have quite a stage 2 turbo. A/R of turbine matches.

If i make an assumption from the info here it would be good to get back to a A/R of .36 on turbine and a trim that is bigger then standard. So the 50 or 55 trim.

Is that a right assumption?

@Rob_DOHC

I see that the powerrating for the GT2554 is from 170-270 bhp, so it will fit my needs. On the other hand i see that exhaust housing is a .64, which sounds too big compaired to the .48 being too laggy already. I know it all involves the compressor and trim of them aswell, but don't you think this will be reacting quite the same a my current turbo?

Thanks!
