popping could be either rich/lean. get it checked out at a rolling road. no point risking a meltdown

You only have to add 12 volts to it Easy if you have the thread in your exhaust

Take a look at your spark plugs immediately after a full throttle run.
If the plugs are white and have aluminum specs on them it is lean.
If the plugs are black with soot, too rich.

other possible indications
black smoke (rich)
grey/white smoke (lean)

a wideband lambda gauge can really save your engine.

Both of the above are good suggestions.

Generally you'd feel a lean engine under cruise, slight hesitation/misfire.

Rich you'd see black smoke from exhaust and or the exhaust going black after a short journey.

Mine runs very rich on gear changes, a puff of black until the exhaust is hot (2-3) hard runs and then the glowing backbox usually ignites the excess fuel resulting in a massive flame licking up the bootlid of the car , god bless a fully wrapped exhaust system!

Lets say i fitted a switch to the throttle position sensor so it didn't see zero throttle, would that be a silly thing to do?

I really want it to pop and bang a bit, but not enough to do it all the time. Call it a fun switch.
