Default what to do after being stood up for so long...

I bought a pretty standard series 2 the otherday. It was last on the road in about 1999 i think.

Aparently... the engine has been rebuilt and new cluth fitted this year, and thats as far as the last ownwer got.

Today, i fitted new plugs, dizzy cap and rotor arm and fuel filter.

After messing around with the leads getting them in the corect order, checking the belt timing is spot on and adjusting the dizzy to a rough place by ear, it now starts ok, but runs a bit rough.

When its running, it does idle, only a bit high. when i take leads 1,2 and 4 off the plugs, it cuts out. but not on number 3...

There is also loads of fuel pressure getting to the metering unit.

when its running and push the flap down, it also cuts out.

Was thinking possibly a dodgey injector?

Any thoughts on this? if i dont get anywhere by the weekend im going to take it to Tremona Garage in Southampton who specialise in RS's and just let them get them to get it going properly and set it up i think...

Does it tapp at all could be a sticky tappet
Try swapping the leads over incase it could be this
Could even be a dodgy plug try swapping the plug over to another cylinder

Ive checked the compression. 1,2 and 3 are all 150psi. 4 is 175 psi. I had it running and idling yesterday, but quite rough. Only fired once or twice today and wouldnt start.

I put an old plug on each lead and the spark was more yellow than blue?

Ive got a new set of leads coming tomorow just to prove a point...

Well i changed the metering unit, made no difference. I took the rocker cover off, and thats when i found the problem. The lifters were fitted upside down!! Lol, i removed them and they fell to bits. Then looked at the cam and it had worn down by about 6mm on the loabs!

Luckily i had a spare head so i swapped the cam and lifters over. Refitted it all. And now... Its as good as new!!

Just a few little jobs to do this week then il get it setup and MOT'd at work on friday hopefully.
