Default S2 cutting out irregularly? And odd back fire?

Hi, I've got a s2 RST which had been was running perfect last night then today whilst giving it some I got a BANG and a cloud of smoke..... Worried me, but all was ok. Earlier on in the day it decided to randomly die whilst driving and resetting ignition allows to to drive again (whilst driving). This and the popping got more consistant as the day went on (just casually driving). I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem as timing etc was set wednesday and had run great last night lol. Thanks in advance

check wiring from igniton barrel, right through to coil/dizzy ect. sounds like the ignition is cut while fuel is still been fed and unburnt fuel is going bang in the exhaust. what colour was the smoke?

id also check the purple fuel pump relay for signs of heat and make sure nothing is loose. have you a spare coil to try? what are the plugs like?

If the rev counter is dropping then its most probably the signal to the coil (sure this is where the pick up for the rev counter is)

part of the dizzy, small plug on top of the dizzy, once that packs up you need to replace the whole dizzy.
