of course it could have been a dodgy bearing on the turbo but i would have expected this to be spotted before fitting an im sure you would have checked for play in the shaft and spun it with your fingers and would have noticed the rough feel of the bearing, only other thing i can think is that the turbo was not primed properly or you have an oil feed problem if all seemed ok on first inspection and the previous turbo did the same thing, im not taking sides here mate just tryin to help so you dont have similar problems in the future

any sort of guarentee?gotta be carefull buying expensive items through a forum, not saying it was a bad tubo or not ,but can see both sides, have sold before and had me pants pulled down and the same buying,If it was me I would refund 50% but then again dont think he legally has to do anything, one question though if the actuator was already set to 12psi what was the need to adjust it

We adjusted it because it didn't boost at all at first so he said we hadn't adjusted it proply so we did it his way and it did boost for a short drive but only 5psi and didn't kick in untill 4000rpm was realy laggy and realy didn't sound right not like a normal turbo then the boost stopped and through out loads of smoke when we removed the turbo pissed out oil out of boost hose and also had water mixed in but after putting me bro turbo on no smoke and runs fine no probs

Yes I took the exhaust elbow off. I thoroughly inspected it before I sent it to him. If you read matts earlier it made a loud pop which was more than likely the shaft snapping due to someone who obviuosly didn't know what he was doing just turning the rod in and out trying to acheive more boost which it did produce. HOW DID IT PRODUCE ANY BOOST AT ALL IF IT WAS SNAPPED.(SIMPLE ANSWER IT WOULDN'T HAVE) Read your own posts matt you said it wasn't smoking. There was no oil in the exhaust side or snail end and there was no movement in that shaft both in and out and up and down was very very minimal. Now a turbo's bearing is not a bearing as such but a floating brass bush which as everyone knows does not rust unless you got some kind of brass that I have never heard of. Stuart you said you fitted another turbo for him and matt said he used his brothers where is the truth in this was it your turbo or his brothers. I bet you fitted this turbo and know slightly more about how they work than matt which obviously didn't know much when it came to preloading the actuator and I reckon it has been overboosted resulting in the shaft snapping.Again read matts posts 'it was boosting then a loud pop and lots of blue smoke' that was when the shaft snapped. Even the priming of the turbo he got wrong. He only primed it until his oil pressure light went out which is nowhere near long enough. The proper way to prime it is disconnect coil or fuel pump fuse with the oil feed not yet connected and turn engine over until the oil starts weeping through. then connect the feed. Continue cranking for a further min or so and that would be sufficent. This is what I think has happenedMatt did not prime the turbo properly went out in it without the wastegate not set properly floored it trying to get boost when the wastegate was open not closed causing the turbo to overboost and stress the shaft. Then he came back adjusted the rod trying to get more boost done exactly the same again and floored it overboostin it again and snapping the shaft. Now I am not dull the turbo would not have produced any boost at all if the shaft was snapped yet alone 8psi and now he is trying to shift blame. I am engineer mate and for a shaft to snap to at only 8psi is bull

Before you go getting all shirty mate nobody can answer the question as to why his first turbo just instantly died no. Then you the master tech who fitted didn't inspect it first bollocks thats all I got to say is if you want to TRY AND PULL A FAST ONE THEN CRACK ON. I am prepared to meet himhalf way with refunding him but noi mway am I refunding for a turbo which has snapped in your posession simple. It was not snapped when I gave it you had no play in it which you being a master tech you would know if you fitted it. The first thing you would do is check for movement. You would have had to set the actuator if it came off another turbo. And for it not to start boosting until 4k kind of proves the fact it was not adjusted correctly and was overboosted which more than likely snapped the shaft especially if you wound the shaft in further to try and get boost which would have overboosted it even more. I am no con man so stop trying to make me out as one. To be honest mate who ever told you to prime a turbo by waiting for the oil light to go off certainly was no master tech that is not the correct way to do it is it.

Part of the Furniture
I suppose thats the problem with buying exspensive second hand parts unseen and we have all done it. Both of you prob feel your in the right and both now lost out. If you had bought a more exspensive new or recon one would prob have worked out cheaper in long run.Such is life, been there done that several times LOL.

Just read through the whole thing, how much was the turbo? To be honest buying something like a turbo should be sold as seen, you had the opportunity to fully inspect it before it went on, I think he is been a gent to over you a penny. I sold a gearbox to a guy in France, it had 2000 miles on it from a full rebuild by the best guy in Ireland, the chap then said the box was fcked. I know it was 100% when it came off the car but how do I know it was put on correctly or even put on correctly and then not used in a drag race to go bang? I don't? If you bought a erst and the turbo went bang a day later would ya expect the seller to refund you? Some times it's a dodgy seller, sometimes it's bad installation and other times it's murphys law. If it was me I would have spent the money and got a rebuild in the first instance! At least you would have real come back. Sorry to hear your situation

I agree 100% with Simon.
Buying used parts can cause heartache. Sometimes they work out fine, other times not.
You would be very, very lucky to get any refund at all.
Used parts are sold "as is" - no warranty unless one was offered in the first place.
Cheers
