Any one had wheel bearings that loosen.. randomly!?
One of the things that im going to sort soon on the escort (which is tucked away at the moment) is the wheel bearings...
I replaced them all using a hydraulic press etc, much like I have replaced all wheel bearings in the past, but the front wheels especially keep loosening them selves!
Like really badly, to the point where the disk was rubbing on the calliper. Got it home from the MOT last year, tightened every thing up properly... about 20 miles later and the same problem
I had to re tighten the bearings periodically over the next 1000 miles. Its something I want to get to the bottom of before it goes back on the road.
Any one had similar? Should I just replace all the NEW bearings again
Cheers

Hmm interesting, noticed my disc had been rubbing on carrier yesterday. Gonna check wheel bearings this weekend
The thought did cross my mind about the bearing but I convinced myself its not that. Noticed a small squeaking sound when driving, that's why I checked the disc and noticed the rub marks

Surely if you knock the end of the nut into the driveshaft to lock it into place, it can't come "Loose" maybe a tiny bit but not inscrew?
On both sides?
I'd order 2 hub nuts from ford and give them a go, did new nuts come with the bearing kit? might just be cheap shite?
What are you torqueing them too?

As above, if its knocked into the tab properly, its pretty impossible to come undone!? Are you being too gentle with your notch? This happened to me when i did my first bearing, thought it was 'locked in' enough but after about 10miles had loosened off. Re-torqued and bashed the feck out the nut so it was truely locked in. And that was 3+ years ago now and never had a problem since

Cheers for the replies, I thought the nut may not have been properly locked in place the first time it did it, but after i stripped it down and re tightened the bearing I smashed the fuck out of the lock tab.... its, then replaced the nuts the 2nd time they 'loosened' and did the same again... I just can't think why it would keep doing it
Maybe if I find new hub carriers as above.....

This makes me wonder too. I have just recently changed all wheel bearings (all tabs bashed to fuck on nuts too) as front had collapsed but were still quiet?????
But I'm sure this last couple of days I have been hearing some wheel bearing noise.
Im Gonna have to check this soon

I had this happen on a corsa, it turned out the drive flange had cracked which mean that it was putting monster load onto the Nut, it was happily chewing straight through the split pin that retained the nut, just chopping it cleanly into 3 pieces and then carrying on undoing.
Not saying it will be a cracked flange on yours too, but something is causing rotational force to be transmitted into that nut more than it should.
Might just be the bearings are no good and allowing movement that way.
Is it the passenger side one by the way?

A friends orion done this some time ago and was worn drive flanges, had to have a pair of new front hubs and new bearings again etc etc...
I'd make sure 1 last time that the driveshaft/hub nuts are mega tight, i give mine some beans with a bar then stake the nut over with a nice blunt ended screwdriver/chisel so it doesnt split the locking tab. If not im afraid it looks like a strip and renew...
The good news is i have a spare hub or possibly 2 lying in my garage.

Due to the way the thread goes: "Lefty loosey, righty tighty"
On the drivers side instead it does up and up and up and then snaps the thread off the CV joint, been there and done that too

Think its got to be worth a strip down and check and fit two new nuts for peice of mind.
