The drain plug is the hole behind the long thing on the side (pull the drive shaft out )

Fit your own drain the next time you empty the box?

good idea muz, you mean either drill/tapp or have a boss welded in place with a pukka oil drain from a bike. the mx bikes usually have on offer as aftermarket items a nice alloy/anodised ones with a pre drilled head for lockwire. verry natty. does the st170 box have a drain? i hear it fits right up to the cvh block with little modification. once again thanks a lot youve been a world of information, happy new year

IIRC the ST170 box is very difficult to fit to a CVH do to the oil filter location.

they dont have a drain plug as they are apparently sealed for life lol! with how often ford boxes break there is no way they should be sealed for life! and yes fill plug is on front of box, 8mm allen key they hold about 3.1 litres iirc

There's definitely a plug you can drain from. Done two boxes so far.

Just below and slightly to the right of the fill plug there's a long rod with 19mm base, unscrew that and the oil drains out. You can't get to it with the box fitted on mk4's cause the cradle covers it.

There's a rod and spring inside it so depending what gear position the box is in when you remove this there may be some pressure on the spring.

Quoted figure is 3.1 litres from dry. Doubt you'll manage to drain every drop out.

Aston thats not technically a drain plug, a drain plug should be at the lowest point??

It's as low as you're going to get, and since the cradle has to come off you can make sure it's low enough. There's no better and easier way to drain 99% of the oil out

Works for me, and Haynes recommended it.
