Default MegaSquirt Learning the Basics

Im in the process of converting my car to MS, and have been doing alot of reading online on the basics of setting it up via tunerstudio. But i'm keen to read up as much as possible.

How did all you MS users learn to setup and map it? Is there any good books/websites people can recommend etc?

I appreiciate that alot of it will come through actually using tunerstudio and "playing around" with the various setting etc, but want to get a bit of a headstart as its going to be a month or so until the MS and the car are ready.

For me: I read every online guide I could and read a lot of project threads but in the end the best way of learning as you say was through actually doing it. Making single small changes at a time and watching to see exactly how they effected the car.

But also there are lots of really helpful megasquirt users on here who were always kind enoght to offer me really good advice, Karlos, Rick, Chip to name just a few.

It's very easy to get good power and good afr's on boost, it's much more time consuming to get a smooth, ecconimical nice to drive car. But tuner studios is dead easy to get the hang of once started, much better than megatune IMO.

Is this just simple plug and play then as the wiring was my main concern with ms and are there any downsides to not wiring a new loom in ?

Rob DOHC isnt a trader on here, so he cant tell you himself, but if you give him a ring on 07792 305 148 I happen to know that he is involved as part of a company that do plug and play versions of MS to suit various cars (I know from the world of vauxhalls as he does them for certain vauxhalls apparently) and seeing as he has MS on his RST I would wager that there must be good odds that is one of the ones he caters for off the shelf as it were!

They just plug straight into the old loom and use all original sensors I believe

Thanks for the links guys, as chip says i can't say anything about what we do at the moment. All i will say is as soon as anything is officially launched we will be traders on this site as thats the fair thing to do, and what other have done.

But on a personal note I'm on PF a lot and would always be happy help any one here with megasquirt adivce not relating to stuff i do/sell.

To say im happy with it is an understatment, the ecu plugs into the existing loom and fired my car up 1st time... after a base map was created/installed.
It suits me perfectly, i can retain my car original loom and if need be revert back to my standard ecu at any time!

This is a really good thread which has helped loads of people out, should have been made a sticky!

https://passionford.com/forum/ford-e...quirt-efi.html

It looks a little daunting but once you get started (especially with a ready made loom) its pretty straight forward.

With a good base map megasquirt will start your car cleanly and effortlessly, in most cases you will probably spend 5mins fiddling with simple settings but you will get the car started very quickly. A wide band lambda is essential (such as AEM UEGO or Innovate) and some common sense

Emailed admin about becoming a trader, but until then the above is generally about all megasquirt ecu's from various companies.

Bare in mind that just cause it might fire up, does NOT mean it is safe to drive, make sure you have a wideband on it right from the moment you fire it up and if its not fuelling correctly change it straight away, driving on a map that isnt right for your engine can write it off very quickly.

Well said that man! I always think of getting a car started and idling as the first hurdle, getting it driving safely is another. The base map for the 1.6 is from my own car, with a few degree's of timing pulled out at higher loads and deliberately rich all over.

LMFAO! I like that! Rich and Retarded... They made me properly laugh, quality!
Yeah i mean mine starts and runs upto around 1,800rpm nicely with no load, around 14-15:1afr. On the factory ofac with a stage 2 chip & beiges it idled at 11:1afr a little rich perhaps , so the MS is already 1 better, esp for economy.

Its not a great deal of work to convert an MFi rst to MS, basically the simplest way would be to get an EFi 3i or Orion and put the whole loom, inlet etc into the RST and then get an MS plug and play ecu and plug it in...

Innovate AEM or Stack, 150ish for AEM n Inno but around 250 for a stack.
I went for an innovate MTX-L easy to fit and really clear readout - take around 20secs to warmup once the engines started tho...
Wouldve loved an autogauge 1 as they are green illumination like the standard dials.

LOL @ footballer map..

Chip: I know i have to map it, its just the difference in building a new loom, and plugging it into the existing that makes me happy I'm looking forward to learning to map it, and trying it out. And, ofcorse, passing the mot with my cat.

Martin: I bought the AEM off ebay, seems like a good kit, cheap at 150.

Yeah slowly but surely, had the boys from boostmonkey.co.uk over today demoing their ecu and played with some simple mapping, at idle and low load sites also with some idle valve settings - all good stuff!
I know its sad but bear with me as im in the very early stages of this... I'm loving the way you can literally increase and decrease the idle and change the way it runs by pressing some keys on a laptop. Its so rewarding seeing what you do to your map have an instant effect on the car!
After xmas im going to really get into it and will try to put up a simple guide to getting the car up and running using tunerstudio.

Havent tried this with ms but i have with haltech (same thing i would of thought) and it is really intresting stuff tring to learn to map.
What we done was got the car to start and run without any problems then worked on increasing the revs so the car could be revved up without any probs then we trailored the car to Simon at Sitech for a check over and he mapped it a bit on his rolling road to make sure evrything was safe.
Then we done some more adjustments whilst using the car everyday and took it back up for him to check again where he made some adjustments to our map and got 324bhp out of it.

We are still hard at it though i think its something where you can learn more and more everytime you work on it.
