Default Gearbox question. Update 27/9/12

Looking to uprate my gearbox and I remember reading somewhere about IB5 bearings?! not sure if this is correct.

Have had a search on a few threads but im still not 100% what I'm looking for.

Can anyone shed any light?

The IB5 gearbox has a larger bearing and a stiffer case. Im using a mk5 diesel gearbox and to date its coping well with hard launches and heary driving but im not using the RS LSD which i suppose is helping it with prolonged life. Im runnng 248bhp 260lb torque and torque steer is a major issue so im going to try and use the LSD but im too not sure if the gearbox will last and might have to go MTX.

Parts you wll need:

Your old fork and bar
Breather pipe for the new gearbox

Gearbox http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-ESCOR...item27bf557935

Speedo Gear http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-ESCOR...item5ae1744e08

Gearbox bush http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Escor...item19b2cdf381

Clutch bearing http://www.clutch-specialists.co.uk/...VA-10-95-11-97

Hope this helps

The ratios are shortish, 4th is ok and 5th gear is very long. If you want to fit a LSD you need a 5th gear puller and a bearing.

Does the gearbox just bolt up to the series 2 cradle using the same mounts etc?
Juffer - What speeds do you get at around 6,000rpm in each gear, from memory mine is:
1st 40ish, 2nd 60, 3rd 90, 4th 120, and i don't know about 5th lol!
Also how does the lsd put more load on the box?

Yes an LSD certainly does load the gearbox more - twice as much load before wheel spin.

Mine is about the same speeds from memory. 5th gear just seems to keep going, its very long.

Although... i forget who i was speaking to, i think it was a gearbox recon company. They were firm believers that the open diff was very much a weak link in the ib5, and the lsd being a much stiffer unit meant less side loadings on bearings.... not sure how true that was but and lsd will load up the drive train more for sure, more grip = more load, same with uber sticky tyres.

PS, my ratios are shocking. Mines a mk5 diesel non turbo van ib5. 4000 rpm is 70-80mph iirc, so not ideal by a long shot!

How do you lower the rpm in 5th gear but maintain a high mph? Is it the final drive you change? The ratios on the mk5 derv box are ok for me but as you say rob 5th gear is a little high in the revs on the motorway.

So which would be the better choice?

MTX75
or
IB5

I like the standard ratios... 2,800 rpm at 70 in 5th, combined with 60 in 2nd and 90 in 3rd makes a nice drive i think!
I see what you mean about the lsd now, i was looking at it the other way - wheelspin = more stress on the box so less spin = less load on it lol!
How easy does an IB5 fit?

Im confused?! lol

Surely the rpm in 5th should be lower at 70mph than a series 2 BC box as the diff ratio is longer.

Diff ratios:
BC - 3.82:1
IB5 - 3.62:1 (not sure if this is correct now)

I think this is also where im getting confused. Isn't it the final drive that will alter the revs? Has anybody got access to the ib5 diesel gear ratios? I have found a few ratios in the search for nearly everything else.

You can change the final drive or the gear ratios. When i looked i needed som funny combination like escort gti gear cassette, and fiesta mk4 zetec final drive to get back to nearly standard rs turbo gearing which i really like.

Can you not just put the ERST gearset inc LSD into an IB5 casing and use the IB5 bearings?

puma 1st and final, 1.6 zetec 2,3,4 and 5 would be close to a standard S2 box

Also i think the shaft in the IB5 would be bigger then a BC, have a puma gear set and S2 gears in the garage so i can check when i have time
