whos running a piper cam?
since i had engine rebuilt at D&s motorsport the car has only done 25 miles i bought the engine off them and it came with receipts from jamsport, D&s rebuilt the engine but didnt replace the piper cam as i was told it was in good condition, since i got the car back it has had a top end rattle, D&s say it sounds like that because its a piper cam. i tell him it must be worn! who is right? lifters were replaced.
he says he will check the cam for me but it will be a week or so cause hes flat out at the minute

if lifters get noisy,you can replace em and its fine.
ive done it a few times before and never had a prob,and so have many others.
sometimes it may stay quiet for 3000 miles,sometimes for 30,000 miles.
cam doesnt always wear at same rate as lifters in my opinion

From reading previous posts on here a cam and lifters fitted together work harden together during the running in of a cam 15 mins at 3k rpm. If you put new lifters in with a old cam the cam material is harder than the lifters and will wear them quicker and vice versa.
this is the pic of my old piper cam after i changed the lifters on there own, 1 fubarred lobe rest of cam was serviceable
I have a piper cam in mine some people like it some do not its your choice.

i did replace the lifters but not the cam....DONT do it......
all what will happen is your the lifters will ware in about 20 miles and your have metal flakes blocking up oil ways and who knows what else...
if money is tight,which it is,stick a ford item cam n lifters in until you can afford your favorite cam....

disagree mate.
if lifters get noisy,you can replace em and its fine.

exactly what i was thinking mate ffs
lifters, seals, gaskets everything in the head apart from the cam, ht leads thermostat ect, he just said it got every thing it needed, it had receipts for bottom end rebuild at jamsport.i have just emailed piper.co.uk and jamsport.co.uk asking them should a piper cam rattle if its not worn, at least D&s cant argue with what piper (who design the cam) and jamsport (who built the fooking thing) this is all giving me a sore head

Its a CVH mate, the valve gear is never going to be silent. If your that worried, pop the cam out and have a measure. Save all this guess work.
There is a difference to noisy valve train and worn valve train. Maybe a quick video.
And to add my 2pence to the above debate, unless i was skint i would replace the cam and lifters together, a worn cam lobe on a new lifter is like fitting new disks with used brake pads, not as bad as fitting a new cam with old lifters but still no good for and engine you want to last.

i thought ur mean to use a basic mineral oil after a rebuild? would this still be the case if the bottom end had no work done?

If the engine has been rebuilt you are meant to run it in on mineral yes.
If you remove the cam you will quickly see if it has any wear, the lifters should be flat topped for example. I've got all the measurements for a standard cam at home but im not sure this will help you.
Piper may be able to tell you what measurements you should take.
It will probably take a couple of hours to remove, inspect and replace the cam.

to measure the cam use the full lift figure from piper multiplied by the rocker ratio
measure it between centres
piper said anything upto either .25 or .5mm(cant remember exactly)
