Default rst had its first run today since rebuild

hi everyone, i decided to take my rs a run today im going to say on a private road as it still has to go to mot, anyway car is being run in an the minute so i didnt take her past 3k revs and everthing seems good apart from 2 things.

alot of niose coming from the rear end, i dont know how to describe it, eccesive road noise or nearly sounds like a wheel bearing gone

also engine seems to be running ok but is quite noisy- is this normal?

thecar has been 1year in the making and this is the first time on the road.

any advice or what to check?

thanks
Neil

what you mean by engine is noisy.??good noise??bad noise??rattle noise???

rear end noise can only be a wheel bearing if its droning cos theres nothing else back there to drone really, except the exhaust.
you say youve restored the car,did you put soundproofing in???in the bulkhead???
have you checked your wheels for bearing play????

engine sounds rattly top end noise but i know cvh's are noisy anyway just not sure if it should be that noisy

the exhast does vibrate a bit at low revs when your turning/parking the car, but when driving the car it doesnt sound like the exhaust sounds not sure if its wheel bearing or not how do you check?

i know all the soundproofing was put back in inside of car cause i did it but someone else fitted the engine so i must check if the soundproofing has been fitted, think it has as far as i can remember

thanks for your help your s2 looks mint

cheers Neil

they are a bit tappy generally mate, but not excessive.
if yours is really noticeable, maybe take your lifters out and check the bottom of them for wear.
there only about Ł30 a set,so well worth replacing.
some people say only replace em with a new cam aswell,i say bull plop, replace em whenever.
as for wheel bearing, jack car up and check for side to side and up and down play at the rear ,with the handbrake off.
you should be able to hear which side its droning from, and for the sake of about Ł15,you may aswell just put a new bearing in.
easy job to do,and well worthwhile.
thanks for the comment on my car,in really enjoying driving it after the resto
good luck
steve

nah you dont need a press mate, ive always used a bit of bar or wood and a hammer.
piper cam shouldnt make it noisy, unless its a worn piper cam.
i got one in mine and its a bit "cammy" but nothing to concern me.
but mines prob lifters a bit worn, next on me list.
have you got a build thread on yours mate?
looks tidy in your sig pic

well mate jacked the car up today both wheel bearings are fine but as i spin thye back wheels you can hear something scrubing in both wheels, i rasng the guy who done the weork to the car and he said the newe rear shoes just need to bed in as the car has been sitting around not being drove, he suggested driving the car up and down the industrial estate while testing the brakes and the handbrake he says the noise will go away as they wear in im not sure what to think about this

sorry i dont have a build thread as he done most of the work, the car is fairly tidy for the age but nowhere near as tidy as your car, couple of bits of surface rust thats really annoying me, tempted to rub them down myself and blow them in but scared of making them look worse as i have no experience in painting. plan to get a full respray done but its gonna be a while before i can afford it possibly winter time.

any advice appreciated mate

first, try pulling the handbrake on and off about 20 times to setle the shoe position.
then,
with the car jacked up,if you spin the rear wheel, does it bind a bit all the time,or just catch for part of the wheel duration??eg,is it just binding a bit at a certain position??
you can adjust the shoes mate but you have to remove the drums to do it.
get a screw driver in the adjuster mech and prize it apart a bit to move the clicker/self adjuster in a bit.
if its only just catching it will eventually wear in but might start making your drums hot and if there painted it will burn the paint off.
wouldnt of thought youd get that much drone noise from shoes catching slightly though.
even if you have no play in the wheel bearings, doesnt mean there not fooked.
they could have gone dry and just been nipped up to take the play out the wheel.
still sounds like wheel bearing prob to me mate

both wheels are only catching at a certain part of the wheel duration.

the noisew doest sound like a wheel bearin whining sounds more like the noise a train would make if that makes sence, (chugg chugg chugg
) faster you go the louder it gets.
cheers fot ur help mate
