misfire - comp test done/rocker off/ ideas??
Hi all,
Driving on motorway, notice car making odd sound, so turn I turn off and notice that the car is misfiring somewhat, heres what i found:
Furthermore, when I removed the rocker cover I did not find any random bits of rocker etc. I did however find oil in the breathers and signs of a heavy breathing engine!
So, my questions.. why the misfire/heavy breathing?
I didn't exactly thrash it home but it didn't feel down on power
The baileys oil breather was previously vented (but i found this to chuck oil out??) unless I've piped this wrong?
Could the misfire be a sign of a worn cam and followers?
Apologies for the long thread and thanks in advance

- its misses on idle and at static revs (mostly below 2,000rpm)
- odd knock/tap sound (very distinctive from top end right hand side
- very much sounding like its running on three when cruising.
- Car warmed up for 10mins
- Plugs removed from all
- Car then cranked with foot down on throttle and readings taken individually from each

Check the obvious things first i.e. plugs, HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm.
I remember my old Xr3i developed a misfire due to one of the cam followers being worn underneath.

morning all,
yes its still on mfi (efi is ready and waiting), I'll have a check over the usual - rota/ht etc .
I do suspect its a cam follower as I have been informed that one was previously "sticking". Is it a case of removing the rocker arm and carefully lifting each folllower out from above?
Cheers

don't force them out if they get stuck cos you will damage the lifter bores. Best to remove the head knock them through and out the holes for the cam. Also remove ur sump to check and clean the oil pickup pipe is clean and free from swarf
