ok so am i right in saying that a standard turbo would be limited to a max of 180bhp because of the 0.36 exhaust housing, but why would a 'stage 2' turbo be capable of more than 180bhp if it has the same size (0.36) exhaust housing as a standard turbo? is it because it has a 360 bearing?

No, a stock T3 will flow about 180bhp because of the compressor wheel size, a stage 2 has a larger comp wheel as well as a 360deg thrust bearing so can flow for about 230bhp and at that point the 0.36 exh housing becomes restrictive.

i replaced my turbo on my s2 as the oil seals were nackered for a refurbished standard t3 unit but it doesnt pull as hard as the turbo i took off, is there a way of checking the size of the compressor size because im pretty sure it was an uprated one? its got 'garrett air research' stamped on the outside - does this mean its a turbo technics turbo?

look up turbo trim in google and you'll find what you need either on a garrett site or mitsubishi one.
to measure accurately the wheel sizes, you need to remove the compressor housing, dead easy six bolts and it'll all go back on no bother, doesn't remove anything balanced.
