S2 Brake upgrades, what's available and what fits?

Default S2 Brake upgrades, what's available and what fits?

I was looking at first stage brake upgrade that fits in a standard 15" wheel (after the S2 260mm ones). I have heard that you simply use the 2WD Cosworth calipers and discs, about 285mm? Is this true, do they just bolt on the hubs as a direct fit with no modifications at all? If so whats the going rate for some secondhand ones?

Don't know about 2wd cossie calipers bolting straight on but 4wd cossie calipers go straight on with a 1mm spacer and 2wd cossie discs

Yeh but 4WD calipers are those sh1te sliding affairs like the standard ones! I want 4pots of some kind if I'm to upgrade at all.

4X4 Cossy brakes were never renound for being great! They were just OK.

The sliding single pot calipers are not very efficient, OK for road use but not brilliant. I had been led to believe that the 2wd 4 pot calipers were a standard upgrade on FWD Escorts but maybe I misunderstood, I would have expected lots of replies if it was the case! I would have thought it possibe to fit a 295mm disc and some 4 pots inside the 15" wheel?

Martin,

Current known common set ups are....

Standard S1 240mm disc and single pots (unsure of rear drums)
Standard S2 260mm disc and single pots (unsure of rear drums but bigger than S1)
2wd Cossie discs on modified 4x4 calipers and spacing shims
2wd Cossie discs on 2wd cast iron (heavy) calipers (don't think these fit directly and have to be modified)
2wd Cossie discs and S2 calipers on brackets.

2wd Cossie discs are 283mm.

After that is anyones guess...bigger wheels and completely different set ups all together.

OK Daz,

Thank sfor that! Yes, the 2wd 4 pots are the heavy ones, very heavy but I believe they work much more efficiently than the 4wd sliding single pots. I've also read on here about Fpcus St170 discs & cals but I think they also need 16".

OK Tony, well done, at last! Will ring tomorrow for verdict!

martin the 2wd 4 pots will need some sort of bracket to fit to S2

the disc on a 2wd are 283 but 278 on the 4wd serria/escort hence why everyone uses the 2wds

the st170 set up is the same caliper as the escort cossie but the carrier bracket is different and will allow it to take a 300mm disc. again this is a staright bolt on (couple of washers to position it)

the 4pot 2wd caliper is the only one that needs bracket made for it

OK, thanks for that....I have a rather nice alluminium 4 pot caliper here that I have borrowed from a new company called "Comp brake". It's very similar to the one that is badged up "Bremsport" from another company. I am still waiting for a price for a pair of these to see if I can put a kit together with the bigest disc that will go in a standard 15" wheel. I think there might be a suitable sized disc of the Mondeo. I will need to make brackets for the caliper though. I seem to remember a mate with an Astra fitting a pair of Alcon calipers off a "Puma Racing" on 285 discs that fitted inside a 15" revolution wheel OK.

Not too many stick with the 15" wheel tho' so it may not be too much of a problem 16" and 17" rims seem to be more popular on the modified cars.

The mondeo from 00> does have 300mm discs but 5 stud I think.
The Galaxy from 01> has 300mm on 16" rims, and 313mm discs on the V6.

The Peugeot 406 coupe V6 has 305mm
The 605 has 290mm
The 607 309mm
and the 806 has 295mm if that helps
