Default Head Gasket

Hi people,

just been inspecting a new head gasket to put on when i change this cylinder head over as i managed to rip the no.2 inlet rocker stud out the head while driving , anyway, my car gets hot very quick while stationary, but cools down nicely while driving, but on the cylinder head, the water ways are pretty large, same with the block, but on the head gasket (genuine ford item) the waterway holes are only about 3mm holes, surely this cannot be right, or should it be like this?

ive tried to circle the little holes for waterways

and circled the waterways.

just wondering more than anything

cheers

im running a standard ford gasket mate with no problems , you sure its not other componants causing it mate...

im now using a motorsport developments fan switch kit and 82 degree thermostat and works a treat.

as said i think it might be old componants causing the problem i went through 3 fan switchs till i found one that worked .

so i brought the msd parts and they are brilliant.

Cheers for the replies guys. I don't run a thermostat in mine as it gets pretty warm quickly, and fan switch is still a standard one so could do with a lower degree one and see if that helps out. For the temperatures of engine I'm hoping there's a block in the cylinder head or something, otherwise I have no idea what it is however them holes in the gasket do seem to be abit naff to let water through, but if that's how its designed it should work fine

Cheers for your help

Thats correct. The holes small to create pressure in the system as the water has to be forced through the holes. Also if the holes were really big and the water flowed through quickly it wouldn't absorb the heat. Same way as the thermostat opens and closes.

Also it makes sure that the whole system is fed with water. If the holes were huge and the water was pumped into the top right hand side of the head it wouldn't get water to the back left of the head and block.

ahh okay that makes sense then.

what could cause the engine to get hot, as in, gets to the red within 5 minutes of sitting in traffic or lights. driving conditions just goes under the M on NORM which im happy with, but then come to a stop, have to put the heaters on full whack to try and take heat out. could it be that the engine is running rich? as i understand this can cause high temperatures. definately not running lean with the amount of fuel and flames it pops on its own. could wrong grade of oil cause it? using running in oil at the moment as its a fresh engine, so that will be changed to something like 10-50 when i change the head. there are no blockages in the block, but not sure about this head on at the moment. the fan definately kicks in, but could do with coming in earlier.

any suggestions i can check out?

Cheers

I would have thought running rich would make the engine run cooler as the excess fuel cools the bores. Running lean would cause it to run hot, as mine did.

What condition is the radiator in? What fans are you using? Fans on intercooler setup?

i would of also thought that running rich would allow the engine to run cooler, but i read somewhere that it increases the exhaust gas temperatures or something, and thought that the head could leak through onto the rad being so close (about 2 inches away)

the radiator is in good nick, still the original, no cracks, no leaks, all fins are in tact, as no blockages as far as i am aware, however to to certain on this, but it used to run cool before changing the management.

The water pump is in good condition, although am going to change it as a matter of course.

using a single kenlowe fan, although setup of it is abit weird.

because when we installed the full front mount intercooler(grs) i wanted the fan inbetween the rad and intercooler, which is how i had it before, but the radiator was on a huge piss and just looked crap, was also nearly touching the turbo wastegate backet, so thought id change it around, so have the radiator further forward, and have the fan on the back of radiator. it is not possible for me to have the fan on the front of the intercooler, next to the bumper as there is literally no room at all, maybe 20 mm at the most, and without cutting lumps out the bumper the fan would not fit.

we tried the radiator in its orginal place, and the intercooler as far back as it gets, and then the fan, but the bumper still wouldnt go on with cutting it up to allow the fan to fit.

i think this could be the problem as the fan i dont think is doing much, just sucking hot engine air and pushing it through the rad, and even if i switch the wires, it hasnt got enough suck to pull the required air through.

i was thinking of putting the radiator back in its original place, pushing cooler as far back as it goes and then hollowing out the bumper and see if i can squeeze it in then, or if that fails then i have no idea lol

yupp, think its 10" kenlowe fan, reversed polarity so it sucks rather than blows air. either way doesnt seem to drop engine temps.

you get different fan types for either sucking or blowing. I would certainly say thats one of your problems

could be right there you know. but would that explain the engine temps rising fast when in traffic? literally from just under M on NORM, to just under red takes 5 minutes maybe abit more.

Fans are either suckers or blowers due to the design of the fan blades. Although your Kenlowe will work reversed it won't be working to full efficiency because of this. Thats why kenlowes have a sticker on the top saying ROTATION and an arrow. a Single 10 inch wouldn't be enough anyway I wouldn't have thought.
