When my gearbox gets hot, like when i'm out mapping and taking the car to the limiter etc.. it becomes really hard to come out of gear and into gears, when it's cold all changes are really nice and smooth!
I bought it having only done 1000miles since a rebuild and I have done another 1000miles myself so it's still pretty fresh!

Am I using the wrong oil or is this a symptom of a shit box, anyone else have this happen?

Have you enough oil in it??You fill it till it spills back out the filler hole,very messy and not very hi-tech!!

Yeah thats exacty how I filled it Micky, took around 3 liters IIRC!
Dont understand why it's really nice until hot?! I might call CTS and see what they think too.

i had this in my box a few years ago mate, couldnt find out what was causing it, but just had it rebuilt in the end with new bearings etc and that cured it so definatlly was something amiss with the box somewhere.

before i go to the expensive of oil cooler and pump

my cts stage 2+ g/box got ,MORRIS LODEXOL FS 75W/90 Fully synthetic gearbox and diff oil in,as sold buy cts

Shouldnt need an oil cooler, i'm not driving it that hard not like on track or anything, my coolant temp didnt even get above 90deg the whole time I was out mapping!!
Maybe i'll try some of that then?! Cant hurt... although draining all the oil out with the box in the car is a problem, only lost 1.5L when I removed a driveshaft last time, i'm sure it holds around 3L.

I too use 75/90 fully synthetic castrol in my cts box Karlos.....though i have to say the symptoms you've got regarding the tight changes is very similar to what happened on one of my old boxes when it was really tired and had seen better days, hopefully nort the case with yours though if it's only done a couple of k

I think a call to CTS is in order to see what they think, if it's wear they will no straight away, and if it's wrong oil then i'm sure they'll know that too!

If it is a shit box then i'm not happy as I bought that from someone on here who swore blind it was a good box!
Lets just hope i've used the wrong oil!
Might have to keep my eye open for a low mileage IB5 box though and slap my Quafe ATB in that if need be!

Assume you got this fixed in the end but what turned out to be the problem?

Reason I ask is I am having very similar probs to what you describe. Works when cold but a doesn't as soon as its hot.

Am hoping the fluid is just low but I have no idea how old the box actually is but does not crunch or whine.

Also on this subject, does anyone actually run a gearbox fluid cooler on their car? Just my BC box has an Aeroquip take off for a cooler but I can't think of anyone using one. Would the fluid get that hot even on a track car?

No I didnt fix it! The main shaft snapped clean in two a little while later when doing a 3rd gear flat out run so I scrapped the box lol
IMO it was an old shit box and had not been rebuilt as it was supposed to be.
My Sport Ka box has been spot on though

mine used to do this mate i used to find that after a motorway drive it would be a right pig to select any gear ect ended up being the clutch that was fubared so new clutch got fitted and ive never had a problem since. i think it was all the trackdays i used to do that killed it tho lol

Would need a pump and thermostat as well though. Just wondering if it would help to prolong the life of a BC box on a track car?

i have spoken to fields about this and im awaiting its first track day to see if needed

im not using a bc box, mine has ducting to cool the clutch and all the aeroquip for cooler, so was used before

Isn't yours an uber rare Hewland box? So would have been in a proper race car at some point?

Would be a nice feature though...

yeah mine is a hewland box so makes install a little easier, will have to wait and see if i need a tranny cooler

Looks like it may have been a low oil level on mine. Have topped it up and went for a run up and down the hill behind my house a few times which 3 sets of speed bumps on it and it seemed ok up and down the box.

karlos, are you using an oil called Comma?

when i had a stage 2 CTS box i had the same problem, as soon as the box got hot under heavy load it was hard to get it in and out of gears. A quick call to CTS and they told me never to use Comma oil, didnt give a reason.

i removed the box, drained the oil and replaced it with Castrol 75/90 and the gear problem went away.

From memory I was using Mobil gearbox oil.

box started playing up again this morning so hope i don't have a leak. Will try a new cable and maybe change the oil too. Have been using Fuchs titan 75w90.

i woulnt waste another penny on that type of gearbox, its not the oil thats the problem, its the box's design.
