Nitriding and Nitrocarburizing kent and piper cams
Hi all,
Looking at my engine build, i have been told that the kent range of cams is very good in profile but wears very quickly due to shite materials and presumably bad surface treatment. Has any one considered getting a piper/kent cam nitrided? I don't know what spec/grade material they use for the blanks either.....
Or does any one know of any other surface treatments that could help us all out? if we find a suitable process i am happy to be a guinea pig etc.

Newman make good enough profiles in their own right, and I've always been under impression Piper make softer than Kent anyway...
That or call Martin Hadland at Reyland, he can get custom billet cams made up for £150 or so IIRC.

Yes that was the other option, i mentioned it in a thread a while ago but didn't get any replies, Getting Newman (or who ever) to make up a batch of 10 custom cams shouldn't be too bad, with the 34 profile etc you could keep the hydraulic lifters too. .
I guess if anyone is interested drop a post, if there are enough i will get onto them.

would be nice to know the spec of karl norris's custom cam as we might be going to look at the very same thing he already does but save ourselves the hassle of it all and for the revs mines going to be running solid lifters only sorry

they only do 2 of the shelf ones, 1 is to go with the zvh engine other is for cvh engine and is a bit lazy like the piper t2 and i am just after something a bit closer to factory cam and spoke to someone running karls custom one and he said it's the best he's had in every way

Who makes karl norris's cams? and yes from what i have heard newmans profiles are a bit lazy, good for some but not for others. You can still run solid lifters I would prefer to run hydraulic lifters which you can't really do with the newmans profiles i don't think?

I've been under the impression that it's not the cam only that is the problem, it's the bad hydraulic lifters available that cannot cope with harder cam material either. I think making their own solid lifters was not a choice by Newman, they were forced to go that way.

Also true, the lifters are made from equally poor material and the bases end up looking like the head of an old chisel!!

15K+ Super Poster!!
Seems the old ones were fine on a healthy engine. I has a 35, and it didn't wear at all in the 5 years i had it in. Aweome with a stage 2 turbo too.
