Default 1 owner from new, original Escort RS Turbo

Hello all,

My boss has just brought an original, 1 owner from new RS which is unbelieveable in the flesh! This thing is mint which is even more of a suprise as it was owned by a mature lady who really wasnt in to cars in the way most of us are on forums.

Anyway, apart from 1 problem its perfect! The problem is when warmed up it doesnt want to run properly, almost like its overfuelling i guess and runs like a dream when cold. I had one years ago and remember some sort of cold start valve problem!? Is this the case or possible sensor issue?

I want to help him as i had many a CVH turbo lump in and out of my cars, rebuilt them etc. Just want to know for sure which path to go down first!

Thanks in advance, kind regards Craig

Doesn't sound too much like a cold start valve issue but its probably 20 odd years old now, so could do with a set of new sensors and a set up (even if standard boost is kept). Unfortunately the mfi unit tends to fall out of adjustment after a while, as parts age etcetc.

Sounds like a sensor problem to me any way

The cold start valve is there for a reason. But it may help you to diagnose a fault. I think a coolant temp sensor may be at fault, thinks it too cold etc.

You have SCC PErformance based in St Albans. Rob and co are more than slightly versed with RS Turbo's. Hey they were key in the build of mine. 01727 867747

To see, whether it's running rich or lean take the air filter off to gain access to the flap in the metering unit. When it's warmed up and running like a bag of nails, slightly press down the flap. If it gets worse, the car is indeed overfueling. If it runs nicer, it was running lean.

Peter good point! But by press the flap i think you should read: lightly touch the flap, you should not move it by more than a few mm or the engine will go rich and die any way.

Yep, sorry, should have added that. About 1 or 2 mm's is enough.
