Doesn't sound too much like a cold start valve issue but its probably 20 odd years old now, so could do with a set of new sensors and a set up (even if standard boost is kept). Unfortunately the mfi unit tends to fall out of adjustment after a while, as parts age etcetc.

Sounds like a sensor problem to me any way
