Default Brake Advice

Hi all im currently in the process of building a Mk4 Escort track car and need advice on the brakes. I have purchased some saph cos 4x4 calipers which are in the process of a refurb at Bigg Red and i need advice on Discs, Pads and Braided Hoses. I was going to go with EBC Discs and Red Stuff pads but after reading a few threads on here ive been put off this idea.

If anyone can lend advice on where i can get these parts and how much i would be most appreciative lol

try burton mate, i think ferodo pads and tarox disc can be a good combo.

Standard discs from a motorfactors and spend the money on a set of ferodo DS2500 pads....use mine pretty regularly on track and can't fault that combination to be fair!

Yeh im looking on there website now and ive a heard good things about Ferodo on the forum and they come in at £106.50 for the DS2500 and the discs are near enough £200 which is a bit to pricey for me as im a student and im tryin to keep costs down cos im on budget which i know usually spells disaster but bare with me here lol

Would standard non drilled or grooved discs be acceptable for moderate track use or would i realli need the uprated items. Also ive heard good things about Mintex 1144's and they come in at a shade under £60 which sounds gd value to me.

Oh right that sounds more up my street. What motorfactors did u use and what make of a discs?

Can't remember what make they were off hand mate, just a local motorfactors i used, 'APD' i think it was, don't think they're nationwide though! I found that i eventually warped the discs after a couple of seasons of heavy track use, but up until then they worked spot on with the expensive pads! Replaced them with another fresh set of discs/pads and fine again, i'm not saying expensive drilled/grooved discs etc may be a little better but myself and a friend of mine have always used that combo and can't see the need to spend all that extra money

Yeh that sounds good to me im not to worried about wearing them out as i will probably change them round every year or so anyway but knowing they will last that length of time is reassuring.

I think i'll go with some Mintex M1144 pads and some OEM replacement discs. Graham Goode does a set of a standard replacements so i might have to give them a call for a price otherwise a couple of other guys seem to have gone for a company called Delphi and they are cheap at around £70.

depends on how much power your planningh on pushing out matey

ive got focus rs brakes on my st170 and its alll standard did mine for show use if your gonna push loads of power out please upgrade your brakes no matter what the cost is as you will regret it when you see the tyre wall approaching you at 100mph

The Mintex 1144 is not usable on the track! I had them on my S1 and they are just a fast road pad. Completely faded away in just two laps. Extremely good pad for everyday use though. Mintex has the 1155 which is for thougher use, but I haven't heard much of it.
Invest in some good known track pads and new brake fluid. Discs are very secondary. The grooves and holes do very little in the end.

what size wheels you using
whats you budget

i would go with ds2500's

but would try for a bigger disc, unsure how big a disc the cos calliper will take, maybe the 300mm focus disc calliper (think its the st170)

Using the 4x4 Cosworth calipers is a direct "plug'n'play" combination with 2wd Cosworth 283mm discs in an RST. These are pretty much the biggest discs that fit under 15" wheels that you probably want to use in track use.

Ok so Ferodo DS2500 Pads seem to be the way to go with what im looking for and the Mintex M1155's are practically the same in price so i will go with the soughtafta and tried and tested example.

What about discs though? How much can i expect to pay for a set of OE Replacement Discs and where can i get them from and what make are known to be of good quality. Will be ordering the parts within the week so dont wanna grab the wrong stuff.

no offence, but track car and budget don't go together.
ferrodo DS2500 pads and good discs, cryogenically treated discs would be a good option.

For fast road use on the RST I have a set of 2wd OEM disks (Delphi) and 4x4 calipers with DS2000 pads, a very good combo indeed. For track though the DS2500's will be the better option, just need warming up a little more than the DS2000's.

Yeh i know what you mean there mate but i use the word budget quite loosely. Im not trying to build a Harvey Gibbs competing car just something which is safe and reliable with a bit of poke that me and my cousin can have some fun in until i get the time and money to build a proper sorted bit of kit.

In essence im trying to source the best parts for the job without having to go over the top with expensive parts which realli arnt necessary.

These Delphi OEM Replacements keep popping up in conversation so i might have to give them a try its just where do i get them and what sort of price am i looking to pay. Ferodo DS2500 definately seem to be the pads to go for in the interest of moderate track usage.

2wd cossie discs mate (delphi etc), iirc i payed around £80 for the set, and the ds2500pads were the same sort of price, possibly a bit more

Yeh its looking like i will be going with 2WD Delphi discs and the Ferodo pads are £100 or so on Burton Power i just cant find anywhere that supply the discs lol

Graham Goode sells OEM replacement discs so im gonna give him a call to ask what brand he uses and what price he sells them for im trusting his judgement on the matter cos he knows his stuff.

mine are cossie 4 pots with godspeed drilled and grooved discs all round, 278mm on front with ds2500 pads and are awesome, dont see the need for mahoosive discs, plus you can run 15" alloys too

mate you can also try black diamond disc which i have used many times with different pads and allways found them good. or the oem discs are good too as long as you have decent pads like ferrodo ds 2500 or mintex do a specific track pad aswell.

i cant quite remember as was a while back now im sure i can find it in the pile of reciepts and post it for you,the pads wernt too bad tbh,altho never really used them properly until warm, best setup ive ever had for what it is
