Default Running an engine in

Just starting to put some miles on my rs turbo and was wondering the best way to go about running the engine in. I know the running in period is for around 800-1000 miles but was wondering about the revs. Do i do the whole run in limited to 3500rpm or up the revs through the stages of the run in? Any info would be appreciated.

You'll hear loads of different advice on running in! The first hundred or so miles are the essential ones imo as if anything major's gonna go wrong (a bearing picking up etc) it will more than likely happen then, and you're wanting to bed the rings into the bores so a few revs won't hurt. Personally i limit the revs to 3k or so for the first 100 miles, then with the boost turned right down steadily increase the revs up to 500 miles, making sure not to spend miles and miles at 1 rpm limit, just not redlining it everywhere but going up and down the gears. I wouldn't do 1000 miles at 3k rpm as the engine won't bed in very well, after 5-600 miles i'd want to be running some boost and driving it a bit harder. You'll feel the engine freeing up as you put more miles on, my new engine's done 600 miles now using varied load and 1 bar of boost now, so an oil change for fully synthetic and i'll have it mapped. Hope this helps a little mate

Yeah mate thats brilliant, ta. Like you said i've heared loads of varying advice on it but that ties in with the majority of it. Only problem being i can't adjust the boost and don't know what its running, all i know is that it currently has a running in map, wotever that may be!!

No probs mate, i'd definately hook up a boost gauge as you need to know what's going on....and if you haven't already, get the fuelling checked as well as you don't want it massively overfuelling whilst running in that could cause borewash! While you're at it, if you haven't already, fit an oil pressure gauge as that could also worn you of anything untoward happening, if it starts runnig low oil pressure you'll know you've got a problem

Cheers again mate. Will do as funds allow. Took it out for 100 miles today and drove lovely, shit loads of torque as its been bored and stroked to 1900cc. Pulling the clocks out tomorrow as the rev counter hasen't worked in ages so just doing guess work with the revs!!! The temp gauge decided to throw the towel in today as well!! Fucking fords lol!!

To be honest it's mostly common sense so as said no high revving, dont run alot of boost through it although I think your boost would have been capped when the running in map was done, another thing don't let the engine labour in gears.

Your temp gauge is more likely to be the sender more than the gauge, easy to test just remove wire from sender and earth, gauge should then go to maximum showing the sender to be faulty.

With the rev counter check the wire to coil as this may have broke.

Where on the coil does the said wire go to and is it a specific colour? I'm fairly confident its the rev counter itself as its done its duties for 270k miles. If its any help on idle the rev counter shows nothing but the needle does raise as you pick up speed showing about 2000rpm when doing 80 in fifth

Now we now know that it does show a reading you are probably right in thinking it is the gauge itself, the wire goes onto - side of coil.

my engine will be run in on the rollers, first set up from first start up, make sure there are no leaks etc, then it will have the revs and a small amount of load gently introduced constantly to bed the new cam in, then up and down gently with a small amount of load for about 100 miles, this should bed the rings in as they only take around 80miles, then a bit more load for say 300 miles then full map with full load. Job done and should take no more that a day.

This type of running in proceedure has been recommended by a few top tuners, cpr, harvey gibbs etc to name a few

HJope this helps
