Default Any reason why I can't/shouldnt fit a cage to mk4 cabby?

Been looking at the floor pan etc on the cabby and it seems the same as a norm mk4.

Is there any reason why a standard rear section cage (Safety devices etc) shouldnt fit?

Would this help stiffen or will it make the cabby worse?

Is the rollover bar that goes across lower than a normal roof line in a hard top?

I would have to change my roof to a manual to clear space for mounting points, but other than door cards i dont see an issue?

Any advice on this would be great

i dont think it would fit at all, the boot is longer on a carbiolet i'm sure, and that makes the cabin smaller, plus you've got to accomodat for the shelf that holds the roof, that cant be touched or else you'd never be able to put the roof down.

Cheers for your reply,
Thing is from the bulk head to the rear inner arch bits i dont think there is a difference from a hardtop mk4. I thought the main concern would be the roll over bar. the shelf that holds the roof is a long way from where the cage would mount on the inner arch bits so wouldnt see that being a problem?

Think i need to get the two models together and get the tape measure out.

i thought it was only the boot lid that was longer, like more of a flat back 'window', not that the whole cabin is smaller

just thinking logically about it...

the distance to the rear turret mounting area will be the same on a hatch and a cabby model, it is just the bootlid that is longer in sacrifice of having a shorter roof, but this wont affect the cage as it sits much further forward

the windscreen on a cabby is the same as a normal, so the a-pillars are same height

the roll over bar on the cabby is tight to the hood when its up yes? so i wouldnt see this being much deeper than a sunroof cassette in a hatch model, so in theory the rollcage hoop should sit under it snug

obviously need to measure to be sure, but in theory theres no reason it wont fit, other than possibly the rollover bar being tight to it. if u need any measurements give us a shout and i will pop out to the garage for ya and measure from floorpan to roof and floorpan to rollbar hoop

i reckon it'll fit, the actual shell is the same bar a longer boot and second sills welded over the standard ones and the roof missing of course.
rollover bar can be taken out anyhow, so no issue there, doors are the same as is front screen.
yes it will fit, but with the roof down it'll look a little daft IMO.

Cheers for you replies guys.

Yeh height wise the doors are the same as standard 3 door ones so reckon height of roll over hoop is same so will hopefully clear cage.

I know it sounds like it might look gash, But if the cage fits snug under hoop or just next to it, then the only highly visable bits will be the bars angling down to the rear turrets, so not much of an eyesor if it means im gonna stiffen my shell up no end.

RS andy - thanks mate, will prob take you up on that offer so expect a pm soon my mates also drive rst cabbys so of no use ha.

have thought about this with mine before now. thing that has always stoped me is the look of it, with roof off think it would just look daft. and with my cabbie havein the roof up makes hell of a diff to when the roof is off. obviously a cage would make it miles stiffer and in my opinion yeah a cage should fit, as you say with removeing some bits.

yeh rear cards and speaker pod panels may take abit of butchering but if done neatly i reckon it would be worth it. I reckon you should give it a go. then at least if mine looks wank i wont be the only one

Remove the roof altogether, put in a cage, strip out interior, weld and flush doors into bodywork... The Escort version of the Lotus 2-Eleven lol Thought about it with my Mk3 cab, but then I do get too much time to think at work lol.

I've always wanted to stiffen up my cabby too and thought of a cage.
I've got front strut brace poly bushes better suspesnsion etc, but theres always something missing.

In regards to the rear shelf for the roof i have been told that this isn't a structural part of the car and it just there for the roof to sit.

Maybe a rear strut brace if someon made them would be good or for the cage one that mount where the speaker pods goes and only goes up where the roll bar is (i.e. remove the original roll bar and have a beam).

I think that the floor pans are thinner width ways because my mate had some chequer plate floor plates made up for his rst then tried to put em into his cabby when he binned the rs n they were too wide so I had em instead. So may need to mod the bottom of the cage to fit
