Looks like the pipe runs to the fuel flow sensor for the mpg computer.

Has you car got a mpg computer?

Its proably not working due to the fuel metering sensor being bypassed (or at least thats one of the reasons its not working).

This will not be causing it to cut out.

First you need to start by checking all the intake hoses and vac hoses for splits, leaks or any disconnected hoses etc.

Has the engine still got a standard oil breather? (pic of the engine if your not sure). If is is still on a standard breather or an aftermarket breather that still vents into the metering unit then make sure the oil cap is securly on and the dipstick is in!

To be honest mate theres quite a few things that can cause the engine to cut out. It may just require a good setup!

Just noticed you have a dump valve in your pic, get rid of it as it may solve your problem!!

The flow sensor has nothing to do with your problem mate, it just goes inline with one of the injectors but yours has been disconnected which is fine.
As above really can be many things causing it to cut out, most common would be air leak, or incorrect idle mixture.

You mean the cooler fitted as standard (between the filter and block)?

It should have two coolant hoses. One goes up to the bottom of the intake manifold (short "S" shaped hose) and the other goes over to a T peice in a hose towards the front/cambelt end of the engine.

If thest hoses are missing (the cooler has been by-passed) it wont be causing your starting problems.

As mentioned earlier there could be any number of things causing your problem. Best bet would be to let someone have a look over it especially as you just bought it.

cheers moonie i have had a real good look and just 1 pipe comes from the cooler plate and it goes up to the in take but no other pipe nor cooler its been removed, anyway i have found a zvh off a mate already to fit cost 100.00 and is 1.8 so i can use my mfi.(reason for engine change is bottom end knocking and quite fancied a zvh) i do suspect the timing/fuel metering unit tho as its loose looks like its been messed with .will be updated when i find out or put the other motor in.

Just to point out.. if your Inlet manifold has a hose connected to the oil cooler but the other hose for the oil cooler is missing and has not been blocked off then you will have no water in your coolant system at all!!

thats just it iam learning all the time with this oil coolers n turbos is all new to me so i stepped it up a notch with getting a zvh 1.8, oil return pipe is leaking a little (situated in the sump) . back to the metering unit tho is this loose pipe supposed to be connected to the small bolt hole in the pic? it lookes like it bridges it, thats if it was bolted back up.
