Default Gaz Coilover problems. :(

I've fitted my Gaz Coilvers, after overcoming the issue's with the front bearing/top mount and so on. I have set the ride-height approximately, if anything it is on the low side, but until it's all back together, I don't want to set the height properly, but one thing is for sure, it will be going UP not DOWN.

However, when you bounce the rear of the car it knocks like fuck.

Gary reckons it's because the rear shocks are effectively 'topping out', so they are too short. Lowering the car more would possibly solve it, but I don't want it lower, I want it higher!! I'm looking for the height I had it before, so the equivalent of around 30mm lower than standard.

Anyone else had such problems?

The only problem i had with mine was i got it to the height i wanted but after a few hundred miles after they had bedded in, the ride height dropped meaning i had to higher it again. Set it to a height slightly higher than what you want then go from there As for the knocking mine were fine

Christian: Have exactly the same problem with mine, though i did have the original rear turrets chopped out and bracing welded in and stronger ones installed. The coilovers have been back to gaz several times now and they've now put slightly longer rods in. However this still hasn't really cured it totally and they stilll tend to knock when going over potholes etc or undulations in the ground at low speed where there is not enough 'downward movement' on the shock legs if you know what i mean. I'm currently in the process of having the turrets lowered and new strut bracing welded in which is costing me money it shouldn't have....as i said in a previous post tbh i wouldn't recommend gaz golds to anone after the hassle i've had with them! Before they lengthened the rods i couldn't really fit them as the car had to sit too low, in my eyes with the coilovers fitted you should still be able to retain the standard ride height and go lower if required.

It's not ideal no....however i'm sure if you send the rears back they'll put some longer rods in for you if you explain what's happening. Plus when i had the turrets done they didn't use the new coilovers for measurements assuming they'd be the same as the koni's i had on there so my turrets are a bit higher than standard. With the longer rods it may well be enough to cure the problem and give you the adjustment you need. If your bump and rebound settings are on the softest it will also enhance the problem, i found winding them up halfway has helped. Have you done anyhing to strengthen the rear turrets at alll??

surely if you bought a set of shocks to fit a escort rst you expect them to fit,you might as well bought a set of shocks for a fiat uno!!!

if GAZ cant supply a set that have enough bump and drop movement for a car at a normal height they might as well not borther to sell shocks!!!!

But coilovers are made so you can lower your car lower than standard what's the point in getting them if you don't want to go lower than standard shocks ?

Most escort circuit racers are lowerd has much as 3" but if you go this low you need mega adjust ability cars lowerd 30mm is good when you have no adjust ability and you need just that little extra negative camber

I said in the original post, I want it roughly 30mm lowered from standard.

My reason for fitting Coilovers is for the performance benefit, not for the look. I would have hoped that if a coilover has an adjustment range, it would allow you to reach both ends of a scale, for arguments sake standard height, down to 60mm lowered. Mine would only stand ANY chance of working if I lowered it at least 60mm, but I doubt they would even work then.
