if your alternator wasnt charging the car would not of run for a hour with a flat battery, id say starter or battery, have you tried putting a volt meter on the battery with it running to see what power is there, should be between 12 and 14 if i remember and then check when you turn it off.

ditto. but should be anything above 12.5 if your alternator is in good nick... also try the same test with all your electric stuff turned on (full beam, heater, heated screen, blower wipers etc) see how much the the voltage drops (you could have a shite wire from the starter motor to the alternator causing volt drop!)

having said all this from what you describe I am guessing starter is fooked!

One thing to check as well is that your boot light isn't on all the time. The switches are temperamental and if it is this drains off the battery without you knowing. Just pull the back seats forward and check without opening the boot lid. If it is just pull the bulb out. This has happened to me on several Mk4s now. You might need another battery as well but it'll stop it happening again if it is the case.

I would be wanting a minimum of 13.4 volts even under load , an off the shelf battery should have 12.6 volts, 2.1 per cell
