Default S2 gearbox question

Hi, can any of you S2 guys help me, my gearbox died on me! Oil everywhere and whining in 1st and 2nd gear, so I have just taken it out, bigger job than I thought!

Does anyone know what code on the outside of the gearbox should be? so I can determine what the box is before I start taking it to bits, can you tell between an s2 box and a normal escort or diesel box without the limited slip dif in it?

First time I have taken a gearbox out, but probably not the last with owning a ford! lol

The bar through the middle of the right hand diff will NOT be there if it's a LSD, the one pictured is a NON LSD.
So if you can see the bar its a NON LSD box.

if you look through the driveshaft hole and its blank with just a small hole in the middle (like yours) its an lsd diff.

wouldn't have been a bad thing if you'd have had a diesel box mate as the power is progressive so there is not really any need for an lsd... i know what you mean though lol lsd's are awesome! Still dont solve torque steer over 40mph though been reading up about the fiesta turbo's and apparently they didnt have one fitted... must be like driving a ferrari on ice Good luck with the rebuild!

dont blame you one bit mate they are lovely cars, hopefully will have 2 soon... not me being greedy just getting rid of mine after i buy a diff one, I must say how good they are on fuel too... i drive to work off boost and back home on boost and it does around 250 miles to a tank, the price of fuel getting nice and cheap again is nearly costing me as much as my diesel polo cost

Yeh it can be very tight to remove, if its loose then the chances are the inputshaft/gear splines are worn and will require replacing. Once you have 5th gear off then its quite straight forward to strip. Just keep everything in order for when you come to rebiuild

If its tight you should be able to remove it with a decent 2 or 3 leg puller. There is also a proper tool available for removing the gear however i cant find any links to it on the net.

Some more useful links...
